Do I need Windows Defender and McAfee Security Center on my computer at the same time?

My computer already has McAfee Security Center on it. Do I need to have Windows Defender on too? And if not, how can i turn it off.

you shouldnt have either, get Avira or AVG. McAfee is almost a virus in itself.

you can have both run and nothing will happen.windows defender really doesnt defend anything from happening anyway.if you have mcafee from comcast you should get the norton security suite from them

You shouldn’t have either, honestly. What you need is a program like avast or AVG antivirus. Both of those are free.

Windows Defender doesn’t protect against much of anything and is pretty useless. It can be turned off by going to Control Panel, and then go to security options and it should have Windows Defender there. You should be able to turn it off there. If you can provide which version of Windows you’re using I can give better instructions there.

McAfee is a bad idea because it’s so very mainstream. Virus programmers tend to make their viruses so that they will infect as many computers as possible and cause lots of damage. As the most commonly used antivirus and firewall software products are McAfee and Norton software, they will program the virus to get around those two.

lol dont forget if you want your computer to run FAST like everyone wants then those security suites will jus slow it down and take forever for ur computer to start
heres one for you that i swear on wit all my customers and they had NO ISSUE IN ONE WHOLE YEAR …WOW IM LOSING MONEY
http://www.microsoft.com/Security_Essentials/
runs on very low memory
directly connected to micsofts securty platform

I DONT KNOW WHY MCAFFEE NORTON AVG MALWAYREBYTE ARE STILL IN BIZ ? MAKES NO SENSE IVE BEEN USING SECURITY ESSENTIALS FOR 1 1/2 YRS… NO PROBLEMS HERE

“You can only RUN one type of Security Software..
With McAFEE you get the Firewall and Anti-Virus/
there are also more Comprehensive Packages for Internet Shopping..
..
When I DownLoad the Subscription from McAFEE it automatically Turns-Off Windows Firewall..adding the McAFEE Firewall..
Then the Subscription RUNS for a Year($$40.00)Updateing my PC..
..
The Comprehensice Package RUNS about $$70.00..
..
I have tried the ISP-provided software../I really prefer the Subscription..
And the New Microsoft version of Security Software has me wary also..
..
I find it difficult to trust the FREEBIES../I’ve tried the Spybot..its virtually worthless..since it doesn’t know what its SCANNING../its just scanning relentlessly..I have RUN multiple SCANS and it would FIND the same(questionable)Problem(??)each SCAN..
I find it can’t be TRUSTED..the others…I rely on a UPDATEING SERVICE..and in five years McAFEE has Defended my PC for a reasonable rate..
The decision in my opinion/
Is all about Internet Shopping..
and McAFEE has the edge.”

With that said everyone has their own opinions about Security software. The ones that cost money work better, period. You may think they are slower, and create more annoyances because they find minor problems all the time but that is because they work better. It’s common sense that the people who are paid to update their databases update them more frequently and with better data and coding. Also you don’t get advertisements and spy-ware in paid software’s like Mcafee and Norton.

Bottom line though is not whether you need a new Anti-virus or not, you just wanted to know if you can use both at once and the answer is NO. Windows defender will be seen by Mcafee as a virus and they will fight for control of your computer which will cause slowdowns and added strain on your memory. Just use one, use Mcafee, you already paid for it and it has been around for 15 years so it’s not like it’s gonna be a scam like many would have you believe.
