Can someone tell me if it`s possible to lock individual folders in a computer for security purposes?
I have several other people that use my computer, and I am trying to find out if I can lock certain folders to resrict accsess. eg. banking information ect…. Thanks guys.

No, you cannot lock folders. The only way to protect them is to making them hidden. This means that the file will not show up unless you search for it on the computer. On any folder (it has to be the actual folder), right click on it and then follow these instructions: Properties->Check Hidden->Apply->OK. Now this folder is hidden! The folder will look like it’s see-through and then disappear. The only way to access it is to click on Search in the upper left section, search for the keyword, and check Search Hidden Files and Folders in the More Advanced Options in the search window. The original computer admin will still be able to see hidden folders though.
No. You can put passwords on files though. If others are using your computer, set them up as users and then give them only user rights. In this way, they will be able to access only their settings and folders.

1. If you have Windows 2000, XP or NT, if each person who uses this computer has a different login and password, then you should place your confidential documents under “My Documents”. The My Documents folder is different for each different login person.
2. If all of you have the same login name and password, you will need to install 3rd party software such as http://www.google.com/search?q=folder+protect
to protect your folders from abuse. I would choose option 1, since 2 is not guaranteed.
sure it is. Simplest way: put them in my documents and make my documents private. Not really secure or encrypted, but if you’re just trying to make them so your family won’t be able to get to them, it’s fine.
Otherwise you need to buy an encryption program or find a free one (I’m sure there are some).
