It’s a good start; I believe that you refer to the free version in both cases.
But i think that none of those includes a firewall or any advanced configurations options.

So let’s say it is the very strict minimum to have.
I personally like Zone Alarm products; their basic anti-virus software includes a firewall (both for about 25$/year), but would still run malwarebytes once in a while anyway.

There is no 100% security solution, so I use an anti virus, router that is secured, windows firewall and a good 3rd party web browser with an adblocker. I don’t click on rogue type malware popups, but press Alt F-4 to close out the window. I don’t do porn or use torrents, limewire etc…I run light and use common sense. The best security is learning and creating a whole disk image backup. Also, malwarebytes free does not protect a system, only the Paid version does. Malwarebytes free is real good as an on-demand scanner along with Hitman Pro…

Yes, if you want to increase your security there is more you can do. The Avira runs in real time. That’s good; everybody should have one of those. Malwarebytes runs on demand and that’s also good. If you are a little obsessed with security you can also install and use Superantispyware, AdAware, Spybot Search & Destroy and others to run on-demand scans. I have four free malware scanners installed and i run one of them each day usually. The thing i especially like about Spybot is the “immunize” feature that prevents your web browsers from connecting to thousands of know bad sites.

Installing a third-party firewall is a good idea. The firewall built into Windows is generally considered to be inadequate. I use Zonealarm, but i hear good things about the Comodo firewall.

In addition to anti-virus software and a good firewall, you need to keep Windows patched and all the applications patched. Make sure you have Automatic Updates configured and working. To double-check, point IE to the Windows Update site at least once a month.

To keep all your applications up to date, install Secunia PSI. This program scans your computer and tells you which applications are not at the latest version or are missing security patches. It even gives you links to download the patches or newer versions. I use it and love it.
