Mississippi health center looking into data security incident

An investigation into the attempted shutdown of a Mississippi health care organization’s computer operations revealed that some files accessed during the event contained patient information, according to a Sunday news release.

Coastal Family Health Center, which serves more than 35,000 patients annually across its 27 locations in south Mississippi, said the attempted shutdown occurred May 13.

There is no evidence at this time that information accessed in the files has been misused, the release stated. However, out of caution, the center said it is providing credit and identity theft protection.

Some or all of the following information might have been accessed:

  • Names
  • Addresses
  • Social Security numbers
  • Medical insurance information
  • Health and treatment information

On Friday, Coastal Family Health Center mailed letters to patients who were potentially affected, but for further information, or if a person is concerned their information was compromised and they were not contacted, call 1-833-909-3915.
