On a scale of 1 to 10 what would you rate my computer in security features?

I have AVG 8.0 free edition, Spybot Search and Destroy 1.5.2, and Ad Aware Se Professional. I scan my computer twice a week. How secure am I compared to the average computer user?

Compared to the average user, about an 8. But that’s because the average user has very minimal protection if any.

All 3 of those programs are the most popular one in their class. Unfortunately they are all pretty mediocre.

That being said, your protection is far better then what the ‘average’ user, who thinks a firewall is used to remove viruses, runs. By far.

You pose a very serious security risk to yourself, because you are not running a firewall (and the one built into windows won’t do…). Google something like ‘zonealarm free’

include a firewall in your list, then it should be around 8…

    my choice of freeware:
    – Avira AntiVir Personal
    – Ad-Aware 2008 Free
    – Comodo Firewall PRO 3.0
    – CCleaner

    its all free.
    free doesnt mean problem
juz choose the best and combine them for the best result

    Let’s see.
    1. Antivirus.
Of course there are antiviruses better and worse than AVG. However, judging by av-comparatives on-demand scan (February 2008), AVG outperforms Sophos, F-Secure, Norton, Bit Defender, NOD32 and some other big name products, being VERY close to Kaspersky and Avira in detection rates.
    2. Antispyware.
Labasoft’s PRO is certainly a solid security software. Together with SpyBot you should be enjoying pretty good real-time protection from spyware threats.
    3. Firewall.
I assume you have a default one by Windows. Always better than nothing.
Overall, that’s a configuration for security-conscious user, though not paranoid.
You can always add a hardware firewall+router, but compared to that average user, yours PC is somewhat unappealing to most intruders.
I’d put you 8+ (with that in mind, pls remember that most secure computers simply do not exist).
