Spammers deserting botnets for compromised accounts

Recent takedowns of automated networks used to spew electronic junk mail on the Internet is encouraging spammers to turn to compromised accounts to ply their trade, according to a report from a provider of cloud-based security services.

Commtech, of Sunnyvale, CA, noted in its Internet Threats Report for July, “Spammer tactics are changing as spam levels flat-lined this quarter to the lowest levels in around three years, primarily due to the highly-publicized Rustock botnet takedown.”
