Several govt & college websites among those infected with online betting malware

Several websites belonging to government departments, municipal corporations, educational institutions have been infected with malware creating redirect web pages landing on online betting and casino websites.

The infested websites include that of Mira Bhayandar municipal corporation which is on the outskirts of Mumbai, the water supply and sewerage board of Bengaluru BWSSB, research institute ICAR. BWSSB has removed these links now but the Google search results still reflects them.

In one instance a blog titled “Betting Exchange in India” is created on the domain Mizoram.gov.in redirecting to a betting portal. While the redirect is now disabled, the blog is still live at the time of going to press. The backward classes welfare department of West Bengal government is also in the list of impacted websites.

Government and education domains can easily be ranked on search engine result pages and the online betting mafia appears to have exploited this loophole.

Among the educational institutions infested with this malware are XLRI, XLRI (Delhi Campus), NIT Delhi, Flame University Pune, Zoram Medical College Mizoram, Himachal Dental College, University of Burdwan and the list goes on. XLRI and Flame have removed these links at the time of writing this.

Betting and gambling is banned in India and the Indian government has issued multiple advisories against promoting online casino portals. With advertisements on main stream media reducing considerably, betting mafia appears to have resorted to hacking and malware infestation to reach out to users.

As all the websites appear to have infested in same way, experts say this is possibly by exploiting a backdoor on the operating systems common to these websites.

Madison teen, accused in Memorial bomb threats, now charged in New York with hacking a sports betting website

A Madison teen who still faces felony charges over bomb threats made at Memorial High School last year was arrested Thursday and charged by federal authorities in New York City with hacking an online sports betting website, which had user accounts that were then plundered.

The charges filed on Monday against Joseph H. Garrison, 18, in U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York allege that in November — about three months after Garrison was charged and released for the Memorial threats — he launched what authorities called a “credential stuffing attack” to find username and password combinations, gleaned from sources on the “dark web,” that would work on other websites where users used the same username-password combinations.

That included the fantasy sports and sports betting website, which was not identified by name in the complaint.

He then sold the working combinations to buyers on the internet, according to a criminal complaint, and provided detailed instructions on how to use them on the betting site. The buyers used them to steal about $600,000 from the site’s user accounts, the complaint states.

In todays world, its high tech versus high crime. Police work like dusting for prints is now supplemented with point and click.

A credential stuffing attack uses a computer program to rapidly attempt to log into financial accounts using a list of known username-password combinations to search for working logins.

Buyers took money from about 1,600 of the site’s 60,000 accounts that were accessed using the stolen credentials, the complaint states.

Intruders were able to clear out an individual user account by setting up a new payment method and depositing $5 into the account to verify it, then withdrawing the account’s balance through that new payment method, the complaint states.

Investigators identified Garrison as the person who carried out…

FanDuel Advises Betting On Better Security After Hackers Stole Private Customer Data

FanDuel app loaded on an iPad mini.

FanDuel is sending out emails to customers letting them know of a security incident that compromised certain private details. According to the email, which we received first-hand, the security breach occurred at a third-party vendor that sends out transactional emails on behalf of its clients like FanDuel. So it wasn’t FanDuel that dropped the ball, at least not directly.

The good news is this could have been a lot worse (like when hackers pilfered $300K from DraftKings two months ago). FanDuel says the unauthorized actor (hacker) did not procure any customer passwords, financial account information, or personal information other than names and email addresses. The bad news is that having access to names and details gives bad actors an edge in perpetrating phishing scams.

This is something FanDuel warns in its email, with one of its bits of advice being to “remain vigilant against email ‘phishing’ attempts claiming an issue with your FanDuel account that requires providing personal or private information to resolve the problem.” FanDuel reminds users that it will never email customers directly to request personal information to resolve an issue.

“Watch out for any attempted password resets for your account at FanDuel or elsewhere that you didn’t initiate. If you receive one you did not ask for, avoid clicking on any links in the email and make sure your email provider password is secure, and not one that has been reused or compromised in a data breach,” FanDuel warns in its email.

FanDuel also advises customers to frequently update their passwords and to avoid using the same one for multiple sites (computer security 101, really), though its best bit of advice is to take advantage of the service’s multi-factor authentication for an added layer of protection.

How To Enable Multi-Factor Authentication In FanDuel

FanDuel account settings pages.

To enable MFA, click on Account in the lower-right corner of the app, then navigate to Account settings > two-factor authentication and follow the instructions. You can also find an option to “log out everywhere” in this same settings page.

You should absolutely do this. According to the folks at Bleeping Computer, FanDuel accounts are in high demand and are…
