How Google Chrome Plans to Block Hacking Attempts on Users’ Network |
Google has been adding features to Chrome to keep users safe. In a bid to strengthen the security of the web browser, the company is working on a feature that will detect and block hacking attempts to gain control of the target’s network.
How Google Chrome will block hacking attempts
Web browsers act as the medium between a user and the internet, hence, it becomes important for it to have safety features to protect users from hackers and take control of your network. By gaining the control of the network, hackers can monitor all the unencrypted traffic to and fro from all the devices that are connected to that particular internet connection.
For example, if your Wi-Fi is hacked, cybercriminals can spy on all the computers, laptops and mobile phones connected to the Wi-Fi. This can also provide access to personal information like name, address, and even financial information.
The upcoming feature will scan connection attempts to user network devices and stop any suspicious activity. Before a website A navigates to another site B in the user’s private network, the feature will “check whether the request has been initiated from a secure context” and “whether B responds with a header that allows private network access.”
“The above checks are made to protect the user’s private network. Since this feature is the ‘warning-only’ mode, we do not fail the requests if any of the checks fails. Instead, a warning will be shown in the DevTools, to help developers prepare for the coming enforcement,” Google said on the Chrome Platform Status website.

Earlier this year, Google started to roll out the Tracking Protection feature that will limit cross-site tracking by restricting website access to third-party cookies by default. The move is aimed at making browsing on Chrome more safe and secure. Google plans to phase out third-party cookies for everyone in the second half of 2024.

Permanent TSB introduces new security feature to block scam links – The Irish Times
Permanent TSB has launched a new in-app security tool that will help detect potential scam websites that are targeting the bank’s customers.
PTSB Protect will alert customers if they receive a text message containing a fraudulent link or block them from accessing a suspicious website on their mobile device.
It is an opt-in feature that will require users to allow it to access browser and text message content to work correctly. But it will work differently depending on what mobile platform customers are using, Android users will get an alert when a fraudulent website is found in a text message; iPhone users will have the content blocked, preventing access to the fake site.
PTSB Protect depends on a daily-updated list of fraudulent links that are posing as legitimate websites, trying to scoop up personal details. The links that are received or accessed on the customer’s phone will be compared to it, with content blocked or an alert generated when fake websites are detected.
The move is in response to an increasing problem with fraudulent payments. While extra security measures such as two-factor authentication have been implemented for card payments and access to online banking, fraudsters have become increasingly sophisticated in response.
According to figures from the Banking and Payments Federation of Ireland (BPFI), card fraud cost Irish consumers €85 million in 2022. That was an increase of almost 9 per cent on the year before.
“Attempts to defraud customers through criminal activity has increased significantly over the last number of years. Our own research suggests that 75 per cent of Irish consumers have experienced an attempt of fraud with 27 per cent falling victim to it. With scams getting more sophisticated, consumers need to continue to be on their guard at all times,” said PTSB chief operating officer Peter Vance. “By introducing PTSB Protect as a new line of defence to our mobile app, we can now directly identify the source of this activity and help protect our customers before their accounts can become compromised. Financial fraud is a significant threat and it is often being targeted at groups that may think they are less vulnerable.”

Israeli protesters block highways, train stations as Netanyahu moves ahead with judicial overhaul
JERUSALEM — Tens of thousands of protesters on Tuesday blocked highways and train stations and massed in central Tel Aviv during a day of countrywide demonstrations against Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s contentious judicial overhaul plan.
The protests, now in their seventh month, have taken on a sense of urgency in recent days as Netanyahu and his allies in parliament march ahead with the program. The first bill in the package – a measure that seeks to limit the Supreme Court’s oversight powers – could become law as soon as next week.
The unrest also cast a shadow over a visit to the White House by Israel’s figurehead president, Isaac Herzog, who was invited to Washington to celebrate Israel’s 75th anniversary.
Herzog, a political centrist, has been involved in behind-the-scenes efforts to broker a compromise on the judicial overhaul, which has strained relations between Netanyahu and President Joe Biden.
In a meeting with Biden in the Oval Office, Herzog acknowledged that Israel was “going through a heated debate as a society.” But he said that debate shows that Israeli society is “strong and resilient.” He added that the country should seek an “amicable consensus.”
Biden, who has criticized the overhaul plan, said that the U.S. commitment to Israel was strong and the bond between the two countries was “unbreakable.”
Netanyahu and his allies say the overhaul is needed to rein in the powers of an unelected judiciary – particularly the Supreme Court – that they believe is overly interventionist in government decisions.
Their opponents, representing a wide cross section of Israeli society, say the plan is a power grab by Netanyahu and his ultranationalist and ultra-Orthodox allies that will destroy the country’s fragile system of checks and balances. They also say the prime minister, who is on trial for corruption charges, and his allies are motivated by various grievances against the justice system.
Late Tuesday, protesters thronged outside the U.S. diplomatic offices, packed the central square of Tel Aviv and crippled the city’s main highway. Police on horseback galloped among the crowds, trying to clear them away.
