“Technology Brings Great Things, But Also Reflects Risks And Aspects”

Sebastian Bortnik, a specialist in technology and computer security, a reference in issues related to the fair use of technology, will be in San Francisco for the first time to speak as part of the “Adolescent Now” conference.Organized by the Municipal Corporation Health Secretariat on 26 and 27 August. There will be time to address various issues and create space for teens and their support groups such as parents and teachers.

Bortnick, on Friday, will be in charge of two talks, one aimed at young people’s “grooming: virtual harassment?” And the remaining one, “Adolescence, Social Networks and Wellness”, for parents.

Before Coming to San Francisco, the Expert Speaks Morning of El Periodico (FM 97.1)where he said: “When this invitation came, I found it a very interesting prospect to talk about a topic that teens are connected to, with social networks, with applications, about the Internet. cell phones, a problem that is super current, until so many years ago it was something that didn’t exist”.

According to Bortnik, “today we find that” Our children are facing a very different adolescence from us because of hyperconnectivity, so not having the experience makes us feel like we have nothing to contribute. And that puts us in very dangerous places,” he warned.

“The Internet and technologies have brought great things to our lives, but also new risks and aspects that force us to reflect,” said the expert. We have to be cautious because internet connection is no trivial matter, very serious things can happen with the issue of cyberbullying, which for example is about violence on the network; Very serious situations, cases ending in suicide, cases of grooming that ended in non-consensual dissemination of images and many other situations”.

In return, the speaker acknowledged that adolescent anxiety and depression are “two problems that have increased greatly in recent years” and undoubtedly have to do with the use of technology, Then he recalled: “I started in 2009 with these talks to teach kids how to take care of their passwords, but over time I realized that it wasn’t the most important thing, but much more serious. WhatsApp update brings major new security feature to check app is legitimate

WhatsApp has launched a new feature, named “Code Verify”, intended to improve its security.

The tool consists of a browser extension that makes sure users are really running WhatsApp – and that the code has not been tampered with an attempt to hack or otherwise attack users.

WhatsApp said it had taken the decision to introduce the new tool because of a rise in the number of people using WhatsApp Web, which allows people to access their messages through their browser. That came after the company added multi-device capability last year, meaning that WhatsApp could connect with more than one computer at any one time.

Using WhatsApp on the web means that users can keep up with messages on their computer, type using their keyboard, and more. But it also offers a new opportunity for cyber criminals to try and break into the system.

That is because while WhatsApp is able to encrypt the messages as they are sent over its system, protecting them from being read, hackers could potentially read those messages by hacking into the WhatsApp Web code itself.

Unlike the mobile app version of WhatsApp, web apps are served up straight to users – meaning that the security can be weaker and people might not even know they are being tricked.

“For years, WhatsApp has protected the personal messages you send on WhatsApp Web with end-to-end encryption as they transit from sender to recipient,” WhatsApp wrote in its announcement. “But security conscious users need to be confident that when WhatsApp Web receives these encrypted messages, it is protected as well.”

Code Verify attempts to fix that. It is installed as a web browser extension and works with internet infrastructure company Cloudflare to check that the code being run is legitimate, and that users are not being hacked.

Once it is installed, it will automatically check that code and show the result in a traffic light system. Users will be told that they are validated and safe, that there are possible risks – or that there is a validation failure and something has gone wrong with the source code.

Comcast partnership with Emerald South brings WiFi hubs across the South Side

For 10 years, Jennifer Maddox has run Future Ties, an after-school program at Woodlawn’s Parkway Gardens.

As a former security officer for the apartment complex, which has more than 1,000 school-age children, Maddox said she felt the students needed “a safe space . . . to feel comfortable and socialize and have a space to do their homework, without being in fear.”

Despite the program being “rewarding and fulfilling,” Maddox said one thing has remained an issue: internet connectivity.

It was an issue exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, when students around the complex couldn’t access the internet to attend virtual classes or turn in assignments.

But a new partnership between the Emerald South Economic Development Collaborative and Comcast will help provide connectivity.

Last week, Emerald South and Comcast announced the launch of the South Side Connectivity Collaborative, an initiative focused on bringing internet access to areas of the South Side.

“We know that connectivity is critical,” said Ghian Foreman, Emerald South’s CEO. “COVID has really exposed the lack of broadband connectivity.”

The South Side Connectivity Collaborative will place 11 “Lift Zones,” or high capacity Wi-Fi services, around Woodlawn, Bronzeville, Grand Boulevard and Washington Park.

“With all the distance learning and the homework gap that’s going on in the country, this is an opportunity for kids to go in and do schoolwork, do research, that sort of thing,” said Jack Segal, Comcast’s vice president of communications for the Chicago region.

He added the Lift Zones will also provide opportunities for adults who need access to internet services for things like job hunting.

Already, Lift Zones have been installed at K.L.E.O. Community Family Life Center, 119 E. Garfield Blvd. and Bright Star Community Outreach, 735 East 44th St.

Other Lift Zones will be at places like Bronzeville’s Black Star Project, 3509 S. Martin Luther King Drive; Washington Park’s Equality Should Be Normal, 239 E. 51st St.; and Future Ties at 6418 S. Martin Luther King Drive.

Segal expects all Lift Zones to be installed within the next two months.

When ransomware gets deadly: Attack brings down hospital system

A Marietta, Ohio-based hospital chain was recently forced to shut down IT systems and cancel surgeries, underscoring the deadly ramifications of ransomware.

In the wake of the attack, which took place on August 15, Memorial Health System was reduced to working with paper charts.

The attack resulted in disruptions to clinical and financial operations, Memorial said in an Aug. 18 statement.

Memorial Health System covers 325 providers representing 64 clinics, spread across southeastern Ohio and parts of West Virginia, according to its website.

T. MOBILE’S DATA BREACH: WHAT CUSTOMERS NEED TO KNOW

While urgent and elective surgical cases were postponed – a serious consequence of the attack – emergency cases, which are the most critical, were not canceled, Jennifer Offenberger, associate vice president of service excellence at MHS, told FOX Business in an interview.

“There’s a difference between urgent and emergent,” she said – the latter referring to emergency cases. “Emergent is life-threatening…urgent is something that might need to be done but it has a little broader time scale to it.”

But underscoring the gravity of the attack, the FBI, Homeland Security and other security organizations were brought in to restore information operations, according to Offenberger.

“We could not access our servers which contain all of our patient data,” she said.

MHS has been negotiating with the attackers with assistance from the FBI, Homeland Security and insurance carriers, Offenberger said, adding that “This was ransomware. We have a negotiated solution.”

One of the most distressing facts about ransomware is that it often requires a payment – sometimes millions of dollars – to restore operations. Offenberger did not disclose the details of the negotiations.
