Mid-West Data Depot offers safe, convenient server data backup storage

With the advent of computers came the need to store information. Nearly every business of every size has countless gigabytes of data related to their operations and their customers. Against the landscape of constant threats from computer viruses and cyber-attackers, data backups have become a big concern.

In the data industry, best practices call for following a 3-2-1 backup strategy; three copies of your data, using two different types of media, and one copy is stored offsite. That’s where Mid-West Data Depot comes in.

Data Depot site manager Bill Gamble said after you consider putting the right infrastructure in place, the business is straightforward.

“It’s a place to store your data offsite. When we bought this building, it was already a data storage facility. Thick walls. No windows. We affectionately call it The Bunker. If there’s a disaster, this is where you want your data to be.”

Gamble said offsite data storage is growing in popularity.

“Data that isn’t backed up can be lost forever due to any number of issues. Our infrastructure means we’ll never lose power, we have reliable and redundant network connections, and there’s no weather that can compromise The Bunker. It’s that simple.”

Gamble points out that 43 percent of cyber incursions annually target small businesses. He adds that of those businesses, 46 percent have fewer than 1,000 employees.

“The scary thing is everyone’s going to get hacked eventually. What’s sad is that 70 percent of small businesses that suffer a catastrophic data breach close within a year. If you own a business, just ask your insurance agent if you can get a discount because you have an offsite backup.”

Safe Tag makes smartphones buying experience in stores convenient without sacrificing security

With the Safe Tag in use, you can walk into a smartphone retail store, pick up a phone of your choice and roam around the store testing it before buying without a store representative stalking you as if you were a thief.

There are a range of strategies and devices used by mobile phone retail stores to address the problem of shoplifting. One of the most prominently used is merchandising security that allows customers to pick and test a new smartphone while keeping it tethered to the display furniture. Some wireless mobile security systems, like the Safe Tag in use at the T-Factory retail store in Mapo-gu, Seoul in South Korea, have presented a workaround for this ugly user experience of anti-theft cables locking devices to the stand.

The Safe Tag for one allows customers to get rid of the shackles of cables holding the smartphones back – limiting the user experience – and allows them to freely pick up and tinker with the phone. The Tag, however, ensures the smartphone in the consumer’s hand is always protected by the wireless cradle that delivers a security alarm and sends location data directly to the store manager. It lets the staff remain assured that the phone will not be stolen and the resulting consumer experience is as smooth as silk.

This wireless security device for displaying mobile phones in stores is fashioned in two parts, the tag and the cradle. While the two, finished in a matte white hue, are designed to work in tandem, they can also pull off the job independently in case the tag is detached from the cradle. Using the Smart Tag is simple, the retailer can connect the tag to the smartphone’s charging pin and dock the tag into its cradle. The charging pin connected to the phone features a sliding hinge to ensure it can rock back and forth to accommodate smartphones of any thickness.

Once installed and placed on the display furniture, the Safe Tag is functional. It transmits a docked phone’s specifics to the linked e-ink display for user convenience and instantly rings a security alarm when a customer detaches the phone or the tag from the cradle. Here are several convenient ways to keep a digital copy of your vaccination card on your phone

(KTLA) – Right now, there is no one official way to keep a copy of your vaccination card on your smartphone, but there are several methods to keep it easily accessible in digital form.

Snapping a photo is the easiest, but scanning it is a bit better.

On the iPhone, use the Notes app to create a new note. Then, hit the camera icon above the keyboard and choose the option for Scan Documents.

Once you’re finished scanning the front and back, swipe left to right on the note. This will reveal a way to “pin” it to the top of your list of notes for easy access later.

On Android, find the Drive app. It should be preinstalled on your phone. Long press the app icon to reveal a shortcut for “Scan.”

Once you’re finished scanning your card, tap the three dots in the upper right-hand corner of the note to reveal some options. Tap “Make Available Offline.” This will download the note to your phone so you can access it even without a data connection. Finally tap the option for “Add to Home Screen.” This will give you a shortcut on your home screen for fast access.

If you want a more digital version of your card, including a scannable QR code, check with your state. New York has the Excelsior Pass App. The California Department of Health lets you request a digital copy of your vaccine record. I submitted my information and within seconds, I had a text sent to my phone with a QR code copy of my vaccine card. You can then import this into an app like CommonPass, which I’ll explain more below.

A service called VaxYes will give you free digital vaccine passport for your phone. Just submit a snapshot of your vaccination card and the site uses artificial intelligence and state records to validate your information.

The Clear App (commonly used for bypassing long security lines at the airport) has a feature that allows you to create a digital vaccine card complete with your photo. There’s no subscription necessary.
