Is microsoft security essentials good to use for protection for my windows vista desktop computer ?

I have this old windows vista desktop computer from 2007 and it’s antivirus norton is about to expire and I’m wondering if i can use Microsoft Security Essentials for pc protection ?? Would it protect me from hackers ?? It’s an old computer so i didn’t feel like spending money on an antivirus for it since i have new windows 7 computers at my house.
