Providing A Cyber Capability Focus > Space Operations Command (SpOC) > Article Display

PETERSON SPACE FORCE BASE, Colo. —  The growing importance of cyber operations within the U.S. Space Force is driving a required focus on space systems at the Special Access Program level, explained Mr. David Wilcox, Space Operations Command’s Cyber Warfare Mission Area team chief. “Recognition of this gap lead to the stand-up of a Branch specifically focused on this… and I was chosen as the lead.”

As the Cyber Warfare Branch chief, Wilcox is the subject matter expert supporting SpOC’s cyberspace secure-and-defend operations for USSF missions. “Specifically, I provide subject matter expertise for integration of secure-and-defend capabilities on Special Access Program, and lead efforts for providing cyber-enabled space operations capabilities for combat power projection.”

The importance and criticality of SpOC’s cyberspace secure-and-defend operations has only increased over time. Wilcox explains, “…I know the impact of my job for SpOC and the USSF is critical to allowing our service to become a leader in cyberspace operations in support of space operations.  Our team, just with SpOC, has led USSF efforts to drive Commanders and Senior Leaders to understand the impact cyberspace risks have on total mission risk as we present our capabilities and forces in support of Combatant Commands around the globe.”

Leading a team that delivers such consequential capabilities to the security of the nation provides Wilcox a satisfaction that comes from knowing what he does, day-in day-out, is crucial and far-reaching.

Wilcox’s tenure as a Department of Defense civilian employee started with the now deactivated Air Force Space Command, and after 13 years developed into his current role which came about with senior leaders’ realization of the importance of cyber operations as part of the newly formed USSF.

“I am very satisfied with the work I do in trying to achieve the end state for SpOC and the USSF,” said Wilcox. “With the stand-up of the USSF, I feel honored to be part of something that will last years into the future and ensure and maintain access to space resources and capabilities for our nation and our Allies.”

Pixel 2024 update solves Camera app crashes and display flickering

What you need to know

  • Google’s light January 2024 security patch aims to solve an annoying crashing problem with the Camera app on Pixel devices.
  • The company has included several “High” level vulnerability fixes for its Pixel line’s framework and system.
  • The Pixel Tablet and Pixel Fold have also received fixes for specific problems, alongside a screen flickering fix for the Pixel 8.

Google is starting the year off with a security patch aimed at correcting some frustrating problems plaguing Pixel users.

The company’s update states the January 2024 security patch is rolling out for the Pixel 5a (5G), Pixel 6, 6 Pro, 6a, and Pixel Tablet bearing update version UQ1A.240105.002. Those rocking a Pixel 7, 7 Pro, 7a, Pixel Fold, or Pixel 8 series device will pick up version UQ1A.240105.004.

706th Fighter Squadron redesignated as the 706th Aggressor Squadron > 926th Wing > Article Display

NELLIS AIR FORCE BASE, Nev. —  

The 926th Wing’s 706th Fighter Squadron was redesignated as the 706th Aggressor Squadron during a ceremony on May 5, 2023, at Nellis Air Force Base, Nevada. The redesignation goes into effect on May 14.

As Nellis’ third aggressor squadron, the 706th’s mission focuses on continuing to know, teach, and replicate fourth-generation aggressor air adversaries. The shift in mission set allows the 64th and 65th AGRS to pursue the next generation of air defense and Nellis’ endeavor towards becoming the 5th Generation Center of Excellence.

Lt. Col. Owen Birckett, 706th AGRS commander, retired the 706th FS flag for a new 706th AGRS guidon. During the event, the squadron commander recognized the redesignation as another milestone in the reserve unit’s integration with the 57th and 53rd Wings in support of U.S. Warfare Center operations at Nellis.

The first part of this integration happened more than a year ago when 706th FS Cyberspace Operations officers and Cyber Warfare Operations Airmen shifted to offensive cyber ops with the 57th Information Aggressor Squadron.

“These are cyber professionals who are testing and exploiting the vulnerabilities of our mission systems, whether it’s software or hardware, to train for the next fight,” Birckett said. “The flying portion of the 706th AGRS is just the second part of that integration plan.”

The 706th AGRS is one of four aggressor squadrons in the U.S. Air Force to own fighter aircraft. By the end of this year, they’ll receive their fleet of F-16 Block 30s to accomplish their dedicated mission.

“We will continue to challenge our future weapons officers and the Combat Air Forces with the highest fidelity air combat training available by providing the most capable and experienced Airmen we can to Aggressor Nation,” said Col. Sean Rassas, 926th Wing commander.

The 706th Fighter Squadron’s flying operations moved from New Orleans Naval Air Station to Nellis Air Force Base in 2007 and is assigned to the 926th Operations Group.
