AI drives silent arms race in security field | News

Artificial intelligence can provide a new frontline in the perpetual war between white-hat and black-hat hackers.

AI has the potential to be a game changer when it comes to digital security because of AI’s capability to detect threats, experts say. Its ability, thanks to algorithms and machine learning, to sift through an ocean of data to pinpoint and neutralize threats puts it far beyond human capability, perhaps offering an ever-alert, tireless sentinel safeguarding important digital fortresses.

“AI is akin to a double-edged sword. On the one hand, it’s the vigilant guardian of the digital realm,” Joseph Harisson, CEO of the Dallas-based IT Companies Network, said. “AI algorithms act like digital bloodhounds, sniffing out anomalies and threats with a precision that human analysts might miss.”

However, it’s that awesome power to quickly analyze large datasets that also makes AI a potent tool for criminals and other malicious actors.

“They use AI to craft more sophisticated cyberattacks, turning the hunter into the hunted,” Harisson said. “These AI-powered threats are like chameleons, constantly evolving to blend into their digital surroundings, making them harder to detect and thwart. It’s a perpetual cat-and-mouse game, with both sides leveraging AI to outmaneuver the other.”

Researchers are building computer networks that resemble the structure of the human brain, which leads to breakthroughs in AI research. This research isn’t just used to power cybersecurity, but enhance real-world security as well. Biometric research, such as fingerprints and facial recognition, helps law enforcement secure important sites like airports and government buildings. Security companies also use these technologies to secure their clients’ property. It’s even reached the home sector, with companies like Ring providing home security solutions.

Field Notes: Dawn of a new millennium

For 30 years, my New Year’s resolution has been the same thing every year — to be in the woods on each New Year’s Day, the last day of deer season. So, in the predawn hours of New Year’s Day in the year 2000, I left out from our house at the foot of Pinnacle Mountain and headed up to a place near the peak of the mountain that I call the “Pretty Place.”

It takes about an hour and 20 minutes to make the uphill trek, so I stopped for a breather about halfway up. I turned around and looked back toward Greenville and the sun was just cresting the horizon, a truly stunning site. It was, after all, the literal “dawn of a new millennium,” which only happens once every 1,000 years. Realizing that I probably would not be around to witness the monumental event next time around, I reached around to my fanny pack, pulled out my camera and snapped off a few photos, and then headed on toward my destination.

Wildlife

I spent a pleasant morning watching the daily dramas of wildlife (mostly squirrels) play out in front of me. A red fox came trotting through about mid-morning. Then several mature gobblers entered my little world for a few minutes, scratched around in the dry leaves and then drifted away out of my view. All in all, it was a perfect morning in the woods and a propitious beginning to the new year.

Dennis Chastain head shotI headed back down the mountain and recalled that this New Year’s Day was special for another reason. It was something called Y2K, shorthand for the Year Two Thousand.  The whole world was dialed in on Y2K back then. Some conjectured that it was going to be the end of the world as we knew it. Because computers had, up to this point, been programmed using only the last two digits of the year, they would not know how to deal with the four-digit numeral 2,000. The doomsayers predicted that planes would fall from the sky and the power grid would fail, plunging the world into anarchy and chaos. Preppers and conspiracy theorists were having a field day.

Since affordable cell phones were not widely available at that point, I had to wait until I got home to find out that the whole thing was a big fat nothingburger. It was not that the problem was not real. It was that…

Probert unleashed against Open field

The Fillies and Mares Open at Saratoga Casino Hotel has belonged to leading harness racing trainer Melissa Beckwith this year. Putting the finishing touches on her ninth training title this season, Beckwith has had two mares dominate the action in the regular Monday (Dec. 12) feature and this week scored her twelfth victory in the top race for the ladies.

Probert (Dali) came into her most recent try in the $16,000 feature as an owner of four Open wins this year despite racing well over half her races out of town in 2022. On Monday, Probert wound up as her race’s 1-5 betting favorite in the five-horse Open and took back in the early going.

In a half mile clocked in :59 seconds, the Beckwith trainee sat patiently before being unleashed by driver Brett Beckwith approaching the three-quarter pole. Resistance was futile for the rivals of Probert who surged past her competition en route to stopping the timer in 1:56.1 for her fifth Open score, a number that is second only to stablemate Sea Shadows and her seven Open victories among top-flight mares at the Spa this year.

Invader Newsy N (Ron Cushing) was the runner-up to Probert in a chalky $6.60 exacta while Pammy Jo (Shawn Gray) earned the show spot in a $17.80 triple.

PROBERT REPLAY

Probert, who is owned by Howard Jacobs, Jim Winske and Marcus Kemblowski, now has ten wins to her credit in a year in which she has piled up over $150,000 in earnings.

Live racing resumes on Saturday evening for closing weekend of the ’22 season. Saturday’s first post time is 5pm to be followed by closing day’s matinee on Sunday which will kick off at noon.

Woman Shot After Opening Fire Inside Dallas Love Field Airport – NBC 5 Dallas-Fort Worth

What to Know

  • Gunfire was reported inside Dallas Love Field Airport just after 11 a.m.
  • A woman was transported from the scene by Dallas Fire-Rescue after police say she fired several rounds inside the airport.
  • Rockwall Chief of Police Max Geron was in the TSA security line and told NBC 5 he heard several shots near a ticket counter.

A woman pulled out a gun inside Dallas Love Field Airport late Monday morning and began shooting toward the ceiling, Dallas police say. The woman, who witnesses said was yelling about her marriage, was confronted and shot by officers. No other injuries have been reported.

Dallas Chief of Police Eddie Garcia said the woman, identified only as a 37-year-old, was dropped off at the airport just before 11 a.m. and that once inside she went into a restroom and changed clothes.

Garcia said the woman exited the restroom wearing a hoody or something other than what she arrived in, pulled out a gun and started firing several shots. Most of the shots, Garcia said, appeared to be directed toward the ceiling.

“At this point, we don’t know where exactly the individual was aiming. From what we are seeing she was aiming at the ceiling,” Garcia said. ” There are several rounds that were found.”

Officers inside the airport confronted the woman and shot her in her lower extremities. The woman was taken to Parkland Memorial Hospital in an unknown condition. No further information about her or the motivation behind the shooting or who dropped her off at the airport has been confirmed by police.

Cell phone video shared with NBC 5 showed travelers on the ground, behind chairs at the gates and sheltering in place while the shooting unfolded.

The investigation is ongoing and Garcia said he expects elements to change as more is learned about what happened. Dallas Police said they do not plan to release any other statements until Tuesday afternoon. Agents with the Dallas FBI’s field office were seen at the airport along with Dallas Police. The FAA told NBC 5 that the incident is a police matter.
