Protesters confront security forces as Iran marks anniversary of crackdown | Protests News

Clashes came as a reported riot took place at a prison in southwest Iran.

Clashes erupted in Iran’s restive southeast on Friday to mark the first anniversary of a crackdown by security forces on protesters known as “Bloody Friday”, according to rights groups and social media videos.

Videos posted on social media by the Iran Human Rights (IHR) group showed marchers confronting security forces in Zahedan, capital of the southeastern Sistan-Baluchestan province, as apparent sounds of shooting are heard.

IHR and the Baluch rights group Hal Vash said at least 23 people had been injured.

The clashes came on the heels of an incident at a facility in southwest Iran in which prisoners started a fire to protest against a death sentence issued against a fellow inmate, and shots were heard, an Iranian news agency reported.

“Following the announcement of the death sentence of a prisoner in Ramhormoz prison, several prisoners have started a riot by starting a fire,” the semi-official news agency Mehr reported on Friday. “Gunfire could be heard from outside the prison.”

Mehr later reported that “calm” had been restored.

Back in Zahedan, protests continued into the night, with several videos posted online purporting to show protesters setting fire to tyres to block streets.

Zahedan’s prosecutor had earlier said the city was calm and videos showing the injured were old, the state news agency IRNA reported. The semi-official news agency Tasnim said police had used tear gas to disperse “a few people who had gathered and were throwing rocks at security forces”.

Internet monitor Netblocks reported a “significant disruption” to the internet in Zahedan on Friday, saying authorities had “systematically shut down telecoms to suppress weekly anti-government protests”.

On September 30, 2022, security forces killed at least 66 people in a crackdown, according to Amnesty International. Authorities accused protesters, angered by the alleged rape of a girl from the Baluch minority by a police commander, of provoking the clashes.

Molavi Abdolhamid, Iran’s most prominent Sunni leader and a longtime critic of Tehran’s Shia leaders, demanded justice for the victims of the…

Center for Internet Security, CREST Join Forces to Secure Organizations Globally

EAST GREENBUSH, N.Y., June 28, 2023 — The Center for Internet Security, Inc. (CIS®) today announced the launch of a joint initiative with CREST, an international not-for-profit accreditation and certification body, to help advance security and resilience to achieve better global cybersecurity.

As cyber threats continue to escalate to unprecedented levels globally, CIS and CREST are launching the CIS Controls Accreditation program to provide organizations a way to show customers and partners that their cybersecurity posture meets the best practice guidance as set forth in the CIS Critical Security Controls (CIS Controls) underpinned by the rigorous standards of CREST accreditation.

Establishing, maintaining, and proving an organization’s security posture remains a high priority for business, government, and regulatory bodies. CIS Controls Accreditation is an exclusive opportunity for CIS SecureSuite Members (Controls, Consulting & Services, and Product Vendor) and CREST Members to offer consulting services to end user organizations who wish to demonstrate that their implementation of security best practices is guided and externally assessed in accordance with the training and validation defined by two renowned authorities in cybersecurity.

“The ability to digest all the data and controls from various devices and systems is essential in this massive shift to evidencing security,” said Tom Brennan, Executive Director, CREST Americas Region. “Together, CIS Controls and CREST accreditations give our joint members an accelerated path to meet risk and compliance requirements in addition to providing a methodology for continuously monitoring their security posture. By using CREST on top of the CIS Controls, security professionals can monitor security from infrastructure that can be observed, tested, and enhanced.”

The CIS Critical Security Controls are a set of globally-recognized and widely-used best practices that provide a prioritized path to improve an enterprise’s cybersecurity posture. This is the first initiative pairing the CIS Controls with a program to deliver accredited consulting.

“CIS is pleased to partner with CREST to provide end user organizations a selection…

The cyber specialists of the Security Service of Ukraine and the National Police seized thousands of SIM cards, bank cards, GSM gateways and other specialized equipment used to support a network of 5,000 anonymous social media accounts on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. The accounts had almost 200,000 users. Police did not disclose the exact number of arrests, which took place in nine separate regions of Ukraine.

This takedown is the latest in a string of raids on botnet operators, including the December 2022 dismantling of more than a dozen bot farms, the September 2022 takedown of two bot farms and the August 2022 dismantling of a group that operated more than 1 million bots.

The SBU on Monday also seized operations of an illicit VPN the agency said had been used by Russians to conduct disinformation operations.

The police arrested two persons from Poltava and one from the Kharkiv region of Ukraine in association with the illegal activity.
