Governor Otu Cries Over Hacking Of Mobile Line

Cross River State Governor Bassey Edet Otu has raised the alarm over the hacking of his telephone line by internet fraudsters.

Otu said the scammers were using his phone line to send text messages to unsuspecting members of the public to solicit for financial assistance.

Otu’s chief press secretary Mr Emmanuel Ogbeche raised the alarm in a statement he made available to LEADERSHIP in Calabar yesterday.

Ogbeche said, “The public is advised to disregard any such messages purportedly from the governor. One of the governor’s mobile numbers was breached by hi-tech criminals in the early hours of Sunday, February 11, 2024.

“The hackers have gone on to utilise the breached number to advance their nefarious activities to try to scam unsuspecting individuals. Please, do not fall for such devious attempts.

“The hacked number has been secured while relevant security agencies are working to apprehend those behind this obnoxious act,” he said.

Montana governor bans TikTok. But can the state enforce the law?

NEW YORK (AP) — Montana Gov. Greg Gianforte on Wednesday signed into law a first-of-its kind bill that makes it illegal for TikTok to operate in the state, setting up a potential legal fight with the company amid a litany of questions over whether the state can even enforce the law.

The new rules in Montana will have more far-reaching effects than TikTok bans already in place on government-issued devices in nearly half the states and the U.S. federal government. There are 200,000 TikTok users in Montana as well as 6,000 businesses that use the video-sharing platform, according to company spokesperson Jamal Brown.

Here’s what you need to know:

WHY IS MONTANA BANNING TIKTOK?

Proponents of the law in Montana claim the Chinese government could harvest U.S. user data from TikTok and use the platform to push pro-Beijing misinformation or messages to the public.

That mirrors arguments made by a bipartisan group of lawmakers in the U.S. Senate, as well as the heads of the FBI and the CIA, all of whom have said TikTok could pose a national security threat because its Beijing-based parent company ByteDance operates under Chinese law.

Critics have pointed to China’s 2017 national intelligence law that compels companies to cooperate with the country’s governments for state intelligence work. Another Chinese law, implemented in 2014, has similar mandates.

TikTok says it has never been asked to hand over its data, and it wouldn’t do so if asked.

HOW DOES MONTANA PLAN TO BAN TIKTOK?

The law will prohibit downloads of TikTok in the state and fine any “entity” — an app store or TikTok — $10,000 per day for each time someone accesses TikTok, “is offered the ability” to access it, or downloads it.

That means Apple and Google, which operate app stores on Apple and Android devices, would be liable for any violations. Penalties would not apply to users.

The statewide ban won’t take effect until January 2024. It would be void if the social media platform is sold to a company that is not based in “any country designated as a foreign adversary” by the federal government.

The governor indicated he wants to expand the bill to other social media apps in order to address some of the…

HONOLULU – Gov. David Ige today signed HB2171 establishing a new Department of Law Enforcement (DLE). The last time a new department was formed in the state was over 30 years ago, in 1989, with the creation of the Department of Public Safety.

The new DLE includes the Department of Public Safety’s Law Enforcement Division (State Sheriff Division and Narcotics Enforcement Division) and Internal Affairs Office, Department of Transportation Harbors Division and the Department of the Attorney General’s Criminal Investigative Division. The new department will also include the Department of Defense Office of Homeland Security, and the Hawaiʻi State Fusion Center.

“Hawaiʻi is the only state in the country that doesn’t have a centralized, independent state law enforcement agency. The new department will allow more efficient and effective emergency response, criminal law enforcement, investigations and homeland security operations,” said Gov. Ige.

“The consolidation will centralize command and control for the State’s critical incident management, improve interoperable communications, and the ability to handle complex multi-island investigations and improve overall efficiency of statewide law enforcement operations. The new DLE will also be able to provide additional resources for other law enforcement agencies in both independent and joint operations,” said Jordan Lowe, PSD Deputy Director for Law Enforcement.

The projected timeline for the transition is as follows:

July 1, 2022 – Transition team begins implementation and creation of framework and infrastructure for the new DLE.

July 1, 2023 – Administrative infrastructure is established in the DLE. The process to begin filling all allocated positions begins.

January 1, 2024 – Transfer of Department of the Attorney General non-statutorily mandated investigative functions and related employees, Department of Transportation Harbors Division criminal law…

Twitter handles of Union minister, Rajasthan Governor, former Haryana CM hacked

REPRESENTATIVE IMAGE

The Twitter handles of a Union minister, a Governor and a former chief minister were hacked on Sunday. The hackers changed the names of these handles and used them to post tweets in Urdu.

The handles of Rajasthan Governor Kalraj Mishra, Union Minister Rao Inderjit Singh, and former Haryana chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda have now been retrieved.

While the Twitter handle of Bhupinder Singh Hooda was renamed as @iLoveAlbaik, the other two accounts were used to post tweets in Urdu.

These hacking incidents come close on the heels of similar instances in recent days.

Just last night, the NDRF’s official Twitter account was compromised. The account was then used to tweet malicious links before it was finally recovered.

The Twitter accounts of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (I&B) and the Indian Council of World Affairs (ICWA) were also briefly compromised in recent weeks. The handles were even used to tweet crypto-currency-related malicious links.
