Chinese firm admits its hacked products were behind Friday’s massive DDOS attack

A Chinese electronics component manufacturer says its products inadvertently played a role in a massive cyberattack that disrupted major internet sites in the U.S. on Friday.

Hangzhou Xiongmai Technology, a vendor behind DVRs and internet-connected cameras, said on Sunday that security vulnerabilities involving weak default passwords in its products were partly to blame.

According to security researchers, malware known as Mirai has been taking advantage of these vulnerabilities by infecting the devices and using them to launch huge distributed denial-of service attacks, including Friday’s outage.

Guccifer 2.0 claims to have hacked the Clinton Foundation

Hacker Guccifer 2.0 now claims to have hacked the Clinton Foundation, but the documents posted show Democratic campaign data from organizations already compromised.

Guccifer 2.0, believed by some security experts to be a Russian team of  hackers, posted several documents Tuesday that he claims to have taken from servers at the Clinton Foundation, the charity founded by former U.S. President Bill Clinton, husband of Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton.

Earlier this year, Guccifer 2.0 claimed to have hacked both the Democratic National Committee and the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC), and the new documents appear to be more of the same.

Two different hacking groups, both which claim to be of the non-malicious variety, have been busy bringing suspended Twitter accounts back from the dead and power-spamming Variety subscribers.

If folks who like news about Hollywood hadn’t heard of the hacking group OurMine, then some of them are very familiar with the group’s name now.

OurMine reportedly compromised Variety’s content management system around 9 am PT on Saturday and published a post which Engadget said was later removed, but the hacking collective’s antics didn’t stop there. Variety’s subscribers were hammered with spam.
