Local program helps to diversify technology industry

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV)– The inaugural cohort of ERIE 21 Lock 4 adult learners walked across the graduation stage Monday night at Le Moyne College after a year-long program in computer programing and cybersecurity courses.

One of the 11 graduates was Triana Reese who earned a certificate in cybersecurity fundamentals while raising her two teenage daughters.

“I am so doing this to be a great influence and inspiration for my girls so that they can do the same thing and see me working hard and want to do good themselves and go places,”

Triana Resse, ERIE 21 Lock 4 graduate

Reese has been interested in computers her whole life. She was working on learning coding during the pandemic when she was approached about the ERIE 21 program through Le Moyne College. The program’s mission is to diversify the technology industry and reduce poverty in Syracuse.

“It allows people to be able to step out of where they’re from and have hope for the future and gain the skills and knowledge that we need to hopefully take our life into better places,”

Taylor Hodge, Assistant Director for ERIE 21 said these college courses will allow the graduates to step into entry-level roles in either computer programming or cyber security, helping to meet a growing demand for tech jobs in the local community.

Reese’s next goal is to find a well-paying job to carry her and her daughters through a happy life.

ERIE 21 also provides programs for students at the middle school, high school, and college levels. To learn more about the program and how to apply click here

The UK helps entrepreneurs develop innovative financial solutions in Mexico

In Mexico, important gaps in financial inclusion mean only 68% of adults use at least one financial product, even though internet access is at 75.6%. The UK’s Financial Services Programme sponsored the Sandbox Challenge (SC), which helped increase financial inclusion in Mexico. It did this by helping Fintech entrepreneurs develop their offerings of digital and innovative financial solutions. The second edition of the SC initiative attracted 200 participants from the United States, Taiwan, Peru, Colombia and Ecuador.

To help SC winners develop their business models, they obtained bespoke support covering legal advice, business-consulting mentoring, financial modelling, cyber security advisory, and programming services, among others.

MoneyWays, a Venezuelan firm, provides a digital alternative to the high costs associated with cross-border fund transfers, which disproportionately affect migrant workers sending money to their families back home. MoneyWays solution consists of a platform providing money transfers, remittances, prepaid cards services, and payments through a real-time wallet system. According to MoneyWays, the support they received allowed them to accelerate the development of their services and have a presence in the Mexican market, which, in turn, helped them reduce the financial burden on remittance beneficiaries.

Plataforma 9.9% devised an innovative solution to help women and informal workers access home ownership through a collective, circular form of financing. Plataforma 9.9% recognised that participating in the Financial Services Programme gave them an opportunity to build their methodology whilst at the same accessing professional advice that guided them in structuring their services to comply with official regulations.
Sagrario Gutiérrez, member of Plataforma 9.9%, shared:

We were provided with skills, tools, guidance, structure, transparency and certainty; it has been an outstanding experience to help build our solution.

This anti-hacker group helps you escape ransomware for free

This week marks the sixth anniversary of the No More Ransom project, an initiative aimed at helping ransomware victims.

Operating as an online platform to help anyone who’s experiencing trouble after their system has been infected by some form of ransomware, No More Ransom was formed as a joint venture between law enforcement (Europol and the Dutch National Police) alongside IT security firms (Kaspersky and McAfee).

As reported by Bleeping Computer, when it started out, the program only supplied a total of four ransomware decryptors. However, since launching in 2016, that number has soared to over 100 free decryption tools that can help combat numerous strains of ransomware.

“Six years later, No More Ransom offers 136 free tools for 165 ransomware variants, including Gandcrab, REvil/Sodinokibi, Maze/Egregor/Sekhmet, and more,” Europol said in a press release.

In total, No More Ransom has allowed more than 10 million individuals to successfully decrypt their infected files via free decryptors. Without access to such tools, the only remaining option would be to pay the cybercriminals behind the ransomware who are using innocent people’s files as leverage for a payday.

And that payday is substantial, to say the least. Upon No More Ransom entering its fifth anniversary last year, it was revealed that the initiative “prevented criminals from earning almost a billion euros through ransomware attacks.”

No More Ransom’s premise is simple but effective. Its Crypto Sheriff tool uploads two encrypted files alongside the ransomware note, after which it attempts to match them via a database of tools that can provide a solution. Once a match has been established, a compatible ransomware decryptor will be shared with the victim. Here, a detailed set of instructions within a manual can help the individual in unlocking their files.

Alternatively, if the search is unable to locate a suitable decryptor, victims will be encouraged to regularly check again due to the frequency of unlock tools being added to the system.

While programs like No More Ransom are useful in battling the ever-growing threat of ransomware, the groups behind the malicious software that…

Trend Micro’s Antivirus for Mac app helps stop malware and block web threats (25% off)

When compared to Windows devices, Macs do suffer less from malware attacks, but it’s better to be safe than sorry. Trend Micro’s Antivirus for Mac app, which blocks web threats, stops malware, and helps safeguard your privacy, while avoiding online scams and frauds, is offering a 25% discount when subscribing to it for a year.

Last year, during the Epic vs. Apple trial, Craig Federighi, one of the company’s most important VPs said the Mac has “a level of malware that we don’t find acceptable.” With that in mind, Trend Micro can help you block viruses, spyware, and other malicious software so you can enjoy your digital life safely.

The Antivirus for Mac app also protects you against the newest types of attacks, including ransomware, which can encrypt your data until you pay off the criminals.

The best part about Trend Micro Antivirus for Mac app is that it offers intuitive settings and clear, easy-to-understand status reports. For example, when you’re browsing online, it will tell which websites could be dangerous to click on, and which aren’t. The same is worth it for Facebook links, phishing emails, and more.

When downloading files from the web or email, it automatically identifies the possible viruses and deletes them for your safety.

Trend Micro also offers a Folder Shield feature that protects files from ransomware by offering encrypted security and lets you know whether someone is trying to access this folder.

With the Maximum Security plan, you can protect up to five devices. Apart from all the features available, it also fixes and optimizes systems, protects and manages passwords, secures mobile devices, keeps children safe online, and even secures privacy on social media.

The Antivirus for Mac plan that offers protection to one Mac is usually $39.95 per year, but Trend Micro is offering a $25% discount, with no code needed. With that, you can protect your Mac against viruses, malware, and more for $29.95/year. You can find this deal on Trend Micro’s website here.
