Ludhiana In a major embarrassment for the state police and officials of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), unidentified accused hacked into a digital sign board installed on the national highway that connects Jalandhar to Delhi on Sunday afternoon.

For over 30 minutes, the board, in Libra village of Khanna, displayed abusive language for Punjab chief minister Capt Amarinder Singh, with intermittent messages of ‘Chahunda-e-Punjab, Kejriwal di Sarkar’ (Punjab wants Kejriwal government). The reference is to Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national convener Arvind Kejriwal. It was only after some passersby informed the police that matter came to light.

“The digital display is operated through Wi-Fi (internet). Someone broke through internet security firewalls and flashed abusive language for the CM. A technical team of the NHAI is on its way to Khanna from Delhi. The accused will be traced and they will submit a report to us. Our own cyber cell is also at work,” said Rajanparminder Singh, DSP, Khanna.

On a complaint from the NHAI, the Sadar police station in Khanna have registered a first an FIR under Sections 500 (defamation) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Section 67 of the IT Act against unidentified accused.

Watch hackers remotely immobilize a car while it’s traveling on a highway

One brave Wired journalist agreed to drive a Jeep on a St. Louis highway while two hackers hacked it remotely, taking control of everything from the air conditioning to the transmission.

The entire ordeal was captured on video, which you can view with the article at Wired. 

The hackers, Charlie Miller and Chris Valasek, had just two years earlier performed a similar hack while the same journalist drove a car slowly in a parking lot. The bigger difference that time was that the hack was performed through a laptop that was hardwired to the car’s onboard diagnostic port, and which the hackers controlled from the backseat. In that case, they limited their exploits to toying with the seatbelt and honking the horn.

Netherlands’ glowing highway gets a temporary lights off

The glowing roads of Oss aren’t working as planned and will be temporarily taken offline according to NOS (Google Translate), an outlet that’s part of the Netherlands Public Broadcasting system.

The roads were only in the experimental phase, integrating a photo-luminescent powder into the paint to create the highway’s glowing ability. The current problem is that the light-absorbing stripes on provincial road N329 do not give off a consistent level of light across the 500m (0.3 mile) stretch. NOS reports this is due to the system’s inability to deal with moisture, a problem that was anticipated when the experiment started.

“There’s no news yet on how the paint holds up against wear and tear,” Wired UK reported when the stripes debuted. “The glow lasts up to eight hours once powered throughout the day, but a patchy inconsistent strip would not pave the way as effectively as energy-guzzling street lights. But it’s of course in the interest of road operators and local government to employ these types of trials, considering the cost savings.”
