Review: Honor 90 holds its ground in the premium segment, but rivals loom large

Many of you may not recall Honor, but approximately six years ago, it stood as a prominent Gen Z brand in India under the Huawei umbrella. It boasted a stylish design and a performance-oriented approach, but it encountered a significant setback in India due to the United States imposing restrictions on its parent company, Huawei. However, Honor soon transformed into an independent entity and has sustained robust sales in various Asian markets. If you are wondering why I am sharing this history about the brand, well Honor smartphones are back in India. The erstwhile Realme India head has started a new company – HTech – resurrect the Honor brand in India. The burning question is whether Honor can once again reach or even surpass the benchmarks it had previously set in India, especially in the face of stiff competition from other Chinese manufacturers.

Design: If I were to summarize the design of the Honor 90 in a single word, it would be “stunning.” This is an elegantly crafted device with a distinct premium feel, and the emerald green colour is undeniably refreshing. It’s worth noting that my personal bias leans towards green shades. However, if you’re not particularly fond of this colour, there are alternative options available, such as Diamond Silver and Midnight Black.

Honor has integrated a spacious 6.7-inch screen while preserving a remarkably slim profile, measuring a mere 7.8mm in thickness. The device’s ergonomic design features curved edges on both the front and rear, enhancing its comfort for prolonged use. Notably, in a departure from the common practice of many smartphones flaunting a metallic chassis, Honor has opted for a plastic chassis, while reinforcing it with durable glass on both the front and rear panels and not Corning Gorilla Glass. This doesn’t translate into a subpar or fragile feel; the device maintains a robust and substantial quality.

However, a notable drawback lies in the absence of an IP rating, which could have granted it water and dust resistance capabilities. This missing feature is a noteworthy consideration for potential buyers who prioritize device durability and protection in adverse conditions.

Pixel 8 And 8 Pro Reviews, Pixel Watch Problems, Honor Magic Vs2 Launched

Taking a look back at seven days of news and headlines across the world of Android, this week’s Android Circuit includes the latest reviews of the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro, problems with the Pixel Watch, Samsung’s ambitious update plans, a new Honor Magic V for China, and Apple faces more RCS messaging pressure.

Android Circuit is here to remind you of a few of the many things that have happened around Android in the last week (and you can find the weekly Apple news digest here).

Pixel 8 Review

It’s a little smaller, it’ has one less lens in the primary camera, and there’s nothing incredibly exciting about the new Pixel 8; but it’s a great day-to-day phone where a lot of tiny advantages add up to something pretty damn smart for a phone:

“Cool design, a better display than before and super-fast performance all make the Pixel 8 a highly usable phone that, unless you really must have the significantly better camera set-up on the Pro, is easy to recommend. The price has gone up this year to $699, compared to $599 last time around. But that’s a great deal cheaper than the $999 you need to splash out on the Pro. Last year’s Pixels were flagship phones at mid-range prices. That’s not the case any longer, but the Pixel 8 still represents good value.”

Pixel 8 Pro Review

The larger Pixel 8 Pro picks up where last year’s model left off, although the popularity of the flat display on the Pixel 7 compared to the curved Pixel 7 Pro has led to the 8 Pro using a flat display as well. As for everything else, the hardware has been iterated on while the AI software makes the real difference:

“All this positioning is lovely, but is it a “good smartphone” for consumers? As an upgrade from last year’s Pixel 7 Pro, there are not enough points of difference in the hardware, and I’d expect much of the AI-based software to be backported over time. Coming from the Pixel 6 Pro, there’s an argument that there is now enough of a difference to be considered.”

Police Say Gang Extorted Millions From Victims Not Just by Stealing, But Lying Too

Crime Blotter: Hackers Fail to Honor Promises to Delete Data

Cybercrime experts have long urged victims to never pay a ransom in return for any promises attackers make to delete stolen data.

Paying attackers for guarantees to delete data directly funds cybercrime and perpetrates cyber extortion as a business model. Just as importantly, it typically doesn’t stop criminals from selling stolen data, as a recently unveiled criminal probe demonstrates.

On Thursday, cybercrime police in the Netherlands announced that they had busted a three-man gang accused not just of hacking into companies, stealing their data and threatening to dump it online – unless they received a ransom payment – but also of failing to honor its guarantees.

Dutch police arrested the suspects – two 21-year-olds and one 18-year-old – on Jan. 23, and two of them have since been jailed and only allowed to speak to their attorney while the investigation continued. “Because of this measure and in order not to disrupt the investigation, the arrests have not been announced before,” police said. The suspects have been charged with computer hacking, data theft, extortion and money laundering.

The investigation began in March 2021 after a large Dutch company reported an attack to…
