The importance of effective cyber risk management

There is now a greater reliance on digital services for agents, this makes it even more important to review and invest in cybersecurity to manage the risk of potentially disruptive cyber incidents.

39 per cent of UK businesses identified a cyber-attack in the last year according to the UK Government’s Cyber Security Survey 2022, although the report suggests the figure may be even higher as organisations may not be identifying attacks and are therefore under-reporting.

Cyber-attacks are on the rise, but despite this growing risk, less than a quarter (23 per cent) of UK businesses have a formal cybersecurity strategy in place.

In today’s world, no organisation is immune from a cyber-attack or data breach, whether this is due to criminal activity or employee error. From phishing attempts to ransomware, distributed denial of service attacks and malware, businesses face a number of cyber risks.

For any organisation, a cyber incident can be extremely damaging – potentially leading to the loss of data, financial penalties and other costs, as well as reputational damage. One of the biggest impacts on an organisation in the event of a cyber-attack or data breach is business interruption.

Cyber attacks

Effective cyber risk management can help to protect your business and your clients. Attackers will often seek to control computer infrastructure and use it as a platform for carrying out other activities, such as sending spam and phishing emails. They also launch ransomware attacks, locking victims out of their data and demanding a ransom to restore access.

It is important to understand what your cyber vulnerabilities are, and what is required to deal with these vulnerabilities and strengthen your defences.

Here are some key questions to consider before, during, and after a cyber-attack.

Before

How do you currently understand and manage cyber risk? What are your existing cybersecurity capabilities?

During

Do you have a tried and tested recovery and continuity plan for cyber incidents that can be immediately activated in the event of an attack or data breach?

After

If personal data was lost due…

CNO Visits Philadelphia Navy Commands; Emphasizes Importance of Columbia-class Submarines

Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Mike Gilday speaks with Sailors assigned to the future USS Lenah H.S. Higbee (DDG 123) at Naval Surface Warfare Center, Philadelphia Division, Feb. 3. U.S. NAVY / Lt. Rachel Maul

PHILADELPHIA — Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) Adm. Mike Gilday and Rear Adm. Douglas Perry, director, undersea warfare division, visited Philadelphia-based Navy commands, Feb. 3, the CNO’s public affairs office said in a release.

Together, they visited the Naval Foundry and Propeller Center and Naval Surface Warfare Command Center, Philadelphia Division, where Gilday toured the facilities, spoke with Sailors and Navy civilians, and received updates about Columbia-class submarine construction.

“The impressive cadre of engineers here who are delivering world-class results are a national treasure,” said Gilday. “The work you are doing here is vital to national security, as well of that of our Allies and partners.”

Columbia-class submarines are the Navy’s number one acquisition priority, Gilday added.

“These submarines need to be delivered on time, on budget and ready for the fight — and that’s what we intend to do,” Gilday said. “Working together, we will get them off of the production line and into the fleet where they belong.”

The Columbia-class submarine is the nation’s future sea-based strategic deterrent and will provide the most survivable leg of the Nation’s strategic triad. It replaces the currently serving Ohio-class submarines and must be constructed and delivered beginning in fiscal year 2028 to meet U.S. Strategic Command requirements. These ballistic missile submarines serve as an undetectable launch platform for submarine-launched ballistic missiles and are designed specifically for stealth and the precise delivery of nuclear warheads.

Gilday toured the Naval Sea Systems Command Compatibility Test Facility where he saw the shipboard-representative Columbia Integrated Propulsion System prototypes in operation and the Arleigh Burke-class Land-Based Engineering Site. He also received updates about the developing electrical and propulsion test facility risk-reduction capabilities for newer classes of…

The importance of sandboxing for SMBs

When the pandemic first struck and countries across the globe went into lockdown, governments, businesses and communities were forced to completely recalibrate their ways of working as they learnt to adapt to this entirely unprecedented threat. Simultaneously, organizations were forced to adapt to an entirely different kind of threat.

Increasing awareness about importance of Information Security

Increasing awareness about importance of Information Security

The Vietnam government has mandated government organizations and departments to allocate 10% of their IT project budgetary spend on cybersecurity solutions, and the spending needs to be made on sourcing solutions from local companies.

Vietnam’s historic Cybersecurity Law came into force in the country. The Law mandates setting up of local offices and data centres for global IT companies such as Facebook, Google and Twitter. The controversial law also puts a clampdown on derogatory and non-state friendly content posted on social media networks.

An alliance of local companies developing Made in Vietnam cybersecurity solutions has been created by the government to facilitate mutual collaboration and contribution of the companies to cybersecurity product development.

Increasing Cyber Threats and Attacks: The evolving cyber threats ecosystem in Vietnam with deface attacks, phishing attacks and malware attacks at the centre of all of it, has been impacting the demand for cybersecurity solutions in the country. Banks, financial institutions, government entities and e-commerce companies are the most likely to be affected with malware and other threats.

Developing Device Ecosystem: Increasing mobile internet penetration and rising PC system penetration has made users in Vietnam more vulnerable to cyber attacks and threats. Installation of antivirus and firewall has thus become a common occurrence among computer systems in the country.
