Lula inauguration: Leftist Lula sworn in as Brazil president

BRASILIA –

Leftist leader Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva was sworn in as president of Brazil on Sunday under tightened security in the capital Brasilia following threats of violence by supporters of his far-right predecessor Jair Bolsonaro.

In a speech to Congress, Lula said he was receiving a ruined country where hunger had returned under Bolsonaro, whose government he said had depleted resources for education, health and the conservation of forests, and undermined human rights.

He accused Bolsonaro’s “negationist” administration of committing “genocide” by failing to respond properly to the COVID-19 pandemic that killed more than 680,000 Brazilians.

Lula said he won October’s election against opponents who had attacked the country’s internationally-praised voting system.

“If we are here, it is thanks to the political awareness of Brazilian society and the democratic front that we formed,” he said. “Democracy was the great victor, overcoming the greatest mobilization of public and private resources ever seen and the most violent threat to freedom to vote.”

After the swearing-in, Lula was due to drive in an open-top Rolls-Royce to the Planalto palace to don the presidential sash before a crowd of 30,000 supporters, while tens of thousands gathered to celebrate on Brasilia’s esplanade.

The mood in the city was tense after the most fraught election in a generation.

Lula, 77, narrowly defeated Bolsonaro in October to win an unprecedented third presidential term after a hiatus that saw him spend a year and a half behind bars on corruption convictions that were later overturned.

His 580 days in prison reinforced his sense of social justice and convinced him of the need to prioritize ending poverty over boosting profits, allies said. Read full story

In his previous years as Workers Party (PT) president from 2003-2010, the former union leader lifted millions of Brazilians from poverty during a commodity boom that buoyed the economy.

Now, he faces the daunting challenge of improving Brazil’s stagnant economy while also uniting a country that has become painfully polarized under Bolsonaro.

“A lot is expected of Lula. He’ll have the…

Reporter shoots video of Biden’s inauguration security arrangements, Internet says ‘charge him for sedition’

Just days after New Jersey Rep Mike Sherrill claimed that she witnessed lawmakers doing “reconnaissance” tours just a day before the Capitol riots, a right-wing media outlet was slammed for showing viewers the details of all security measures that have been taken to ensure that President-elect Joe Biden’s inauguration will be a smooth and uneventful one.

A series of videos were posted by Right Side Broadcasting that showed the specific roads blocked off in Washington, DC, and what security is at precise areas in the city. Photos of fences and trucks blocking roads in and around the venue of the event have been posted by multiple news outlets anyway, giving people a pretty good idea of the increased security measures.

However, Right Side Broadcasting reporter Brian Glenn felt the need to walk through the streets, pointing out specific roads, corners, and directions in multiple videos. “We’re going to take you on a journey around the city here of what exactly is going on here, as is very much a different scene here in Washington, D.C.,” says Glenn in the video.

“Right Side Broadcasting News, a Trump supporting independent network with 1.39m YouTube subscribers, filmed an interesting livestream segment this evening doing a walkthrough of DC security measures for their audience. Over 254k people have watched the 36-minute video as of this tweet, in which Right Side Broadcasting Network anchor Brian Glenn shows his audience in detail where security checkpoints are, what they look like, and how to maneuver around locked down Washington DC,” a journalist for The Intercept captioned the video of Glenn’s pre-inaugural coverage. Legal analyst Marcy Wheeler characterized it as “Pro Trump media doing reconnaissance of the Inauguration security” on Twitter.

TSA increases security at DC airport ahead of Biden’s Inauguration

  • The Transportation Security Administration has ‘significantly increased’ security at DC airports ahead of Inauguration Day.
  • Following the attacks at the Capitol building two weeks ago, TSA is processing hundreds of names with law enforcement agencies for a thorough risk assessment, according to a statement published Friday.
  • Similar to previous inaugurations, screening officers will be deployed to assist the Secret Service by screening individuals along the parade route and those authorized to attend the Inauguration in-person.
  • But TSA Media Relations manager Robert Langston told Insider that while the agency has a traditional role in security related to presidential inaugurations, “this year may be different in that there is still a pandemic and a different threat environment.”

The Transportation Security Administration has ‘significantly increased’ security at DC airports ahead of Inauguration Day, the agency announced in a statement Friday.

Following the attacks at the Capitol building on Jan. 6, TSA is processing hundreds of names with law enforcement agencies for a thorough risk assessment.

“Our intelligence and vetting professionals are working diligently around the clock to ensure those who may pose a threat to our aviation sector undergo enhanced screening or are prevented from boarding an aircraft,” the statement said.

As in previous inaugurations, TSA officers will be deployed to assist the Secret Service by screening individuals along the parade route and those authorized to attend the Inauguration in-person. Beyond the Inauguration grounds, TSA has implemented additional layers of security at all three Washington, DC-area airports, according to the TSA statement.

Those security layers include more law enforcement and explosives detection canine teams, random gate screening, increased number of Federal Air Marshals on certain flights, and additional Visible Intermodal Prevention and Response teams to provide greater security presence at certain rail transportation hubs.

“I expect there is some elevated risk of a cybersecurity attack, especially from those who want to demonstrate the country is in chaos and to undermine democracy,” says Phil Reitinger, a former director of the National Cyber Security Center who’s now president and CEO of the Global Cyber Alliance.

Security experts say potential risks could include attacks on critical infrastructure tied to the inauguration and threat actors using the…
