I’m a security expert – never click killer link on your iPhone or Android or ‘it may be too late’ to save you

SCAMMERS have many tricks up their sleeves to try and convince you to click on their malicious links.

One type of link may seem harmless at first sight but can be just as dangerous as a more obvious scam link.

The link you never want to click was brought to light by cyber security company and tech expert Kaspersky on how URL shorteners work, how they can be used, and the privacy and security threats they pose.

The tech expert highlighted that you want to avoid “disguised malicious links” that show up as shortened links.

Some scammers will send a shortened version of their estranged link to make it look more convincing.

Scam links will usually have tons of weird numbers, symbols, and misspellings but shortening the link can help them bypass that.

Shortening links can be easily done through a URL shortener online.

The shortened link may make cause a victim to overlook the need to rethink if it is a scam link.

Short links make it impossible to catch mistakes in the URL at first glance.

“You can only find out where a link points after clicking. And by then it may be too late — if the attackers exploit a zero-click vulnerability in the browser, the infection can occur as soon as you land on the malicious site,” Kaspersky said.

Another goal of the scam is to catch you at the right moment when you may be paying less attention.

The scam links can lead to websites that will ask for personal information to steal your money.

They can also lead you to a malicious source that puts a virus on your computer.

Pixel April 2023 update is late, marking second delay in a row

Historically, Pixel security patches are released on the first Monday of the month at 10 a.m. PT. Following last month’s situation, Google has yet to release the April 2023 update for the Pixel 4a to 7 Pro.

As Monday winds down, the company has yet to post a “Google Pixel Update – April 2023” changelog, detail the “Pixel Update Bulletin—April 2023,” or release full Factory/OTA Images.

The “Android Security Bulletin—April 2023” was released at the usual time, but carriers (Verizon) have yet to detail.

We’re not expecting the April security patch to be a big upgrade since Android 13 QPR2 rolled out last month. At best, there should be a handful of functional updates and other fixes. (The next Feature Drop/QPR3 is expected in June, with testing already underway.)

It comes as one user last week received an April 5, 2023 security update on their Pixel 5 ahead of schedule. That was a one-off incident with no other reports (possibly internal testing), but it did reveal a build number that suggested nothing significant is likely to change.

There’s no obvious reason for the update to not be released today (i.e., Monday isn’t a public holiday in the US). The last notable delay was in August 2022, when Google did not roll out an update on schedule because it was waiting for Android 13, which received a mid-month launch. Before that, the Pixel 6 series was not updated at the same time as older phones, with Tensor likely at fault.

Google never explained why the updates were delayed last month, and the company didn’t provide any guidance when we asked today about April.

Meanwhile, the Pixel Watch has yet to see its April 2023 update. Google has been updating the wearable on the same day/schedule as its phone. Last month’s sizable Pixel Watch release widely rolled out as part of the second wave alongside the Pixel 6, 6 Pro, and 6a.

Hopefully, the April delay is not as significant as last month’s, and this doesn’t become a habit for Google.

Galaxy A71 5G is getting a security update two months late in the US

Last updated: March 8th, 2022 at 08:05 UTC+01:00

The Galaxy A71 5G was among Samsung’s first mid-range 5G smartphones to be launched in the US. It was also launched in some Asian and European countries and in Australia and New Zealand. The phone has now received a new security update in the US, but it is already two months late.

The latest software update for the carrier-locked version of the Galaxy A71 5G comes with firmware version A716USQU6DVA2. It includes the January 2022 security patch that fixes over five dozen privacy and security-related vulnerabilities. It also contains general bug fixes and device stability improvements.

The new update for the Galaxy A71 5G is now available on Sprint and T-Mobile’s carrier networks in the US. Other carriers could release the update within the next few days. Samsung is usually among the first OEMs to release new software updates, but updates could get delayed with carrier-locked models due to additional testing and verification stages.

If you use a carrier-locked version of the Galaxy A71 5G in the US, you can check for the new update manually by navigating to Settings » Software update and tapping on Download and install. You can also download the latest firmware file from our firmware database and flash it manually.
