Former ‘Dancing with the Stars’ personality sashays for Lord Mayor – again

A third candidate in the Adelaide City Council mayoral race has materialised, telling CityMag if elected he would get rid of WiFi and Uber in the city, and lead free workshops about the “health dangers” of “radiation exposure”.

Steven Kelly, an Adelaide-based business person and owner of Rundle Street venue The Loft, has announced his candidacy to once again run for Lord Mayor.

Kelly’s announcement comes after incumbent Lord Mayor Sandy Verschoor confirmed her candidacy to the media over the weekend, and weeks after former senator Rex Patrick firmed up his tilt exclusively to InDaily.

A self-described hospitality entrepreneur and former Dancing With The Stars Greecepersonality“, Kelly was unsuccessful in his bid for the lord mayoral position in the 2018 Adelaide City Council general elections.

During his last campaign, Kelly said if elected he would fix homelessness within 60 days of taking office, improve the council’s internet security, and open-up free parking in the city.

Kelly declined to speak to CityMag about his renewed candidacy over the phone. However, he answered our questions in written responses, composed through a “voice-to-text software program”, sent via an encrypted ProtonMail email account.

In regards to his renewed campaign, there had been “serious matters” that have come up over the past four years that “must be attended to”.

“Things” within the Adelaide City Council were “not transparent”, he said, and as Lord Mayor he would bring back “responsibility and humanity” that is “so much missing”.

“I want to get involved with the real issues [and] work on substantial matters that make a difference, not just go in there where the gold robe and do what I’m told to,” Kelly said.

His 10-point policy plan features similar themes to his last council election attempt; this time he says he will fix rough sleeping within “two months” of the first day of taking office and improve the city’s nightlife.

However, he would also like to put the Adelaide City Council’s IT system under a…

Troop cuts will leave the Army at breaking point, says Lord Dannatt

“I’m afraid the future is not going to be returned to things pre 24th of February, the future is going to be a grumpy, resurgent Russia on the borders of countries in Eastern Europe,” he said. “We’ve got to play our part in deterring Russian aggression.”

Lord Dannatt added: “When it comes to old fashioned fighting, numbers do matter and to have an Army of only just over 70,000 30 per cent down from where we were 10 years ago is going to leave us woefully short if we find that we’ve got to maintain large number of troops at high readiness forward-deployed in Eastern Europe.”

Last week, Mr Johnson said the UK would boost its defence spending in the wake of the war in Ukraine, as he warned of a “very different era” of insecurity in Europe. However, his official spokesman also insisted that UK troop numbers were “the right size”.

The spokesman added that it was “wrong to focus solely on the numbers” and stressed that the Government was investing in cyber warfare and other new technology.

However, General Sir Patrick Sanders, the new head of the Army, warned last week that “it would be perverse” for himself to advocate for reducing the size of the Army “as a land war rages in Europe and [Vladimir] Putin’s territorial ambitions extend into the rest of the decade and beyond Ukraine”.

Lord Dannatt also said he anticpated that Russia would take Donetsk and Luhansk in the “next few days and weeks”.

However, he cautioned that in doing so Russia would not have won the war, nor would Ukrainians have lost. He said that instead, the war would go “into the deep trees”.

A Billion-Dollar Dark Web Crime Lord Calls It Quits

Just over a week ago, an employee at a water treatment plant in Oldsmar, Florida, noticed that the cursor on his screen started moving on its own. Soon it was clicking through controls, raising the supply of lye in the water supply from 100 parts per million to 1,100 ppm, enough to cause serious damage to human tissue. Fortunately, the employee moved quickly to revert things to normal levels. It is still unclear who was behind this dramatic hack, and it’s a sober reminder of how exposed so many industrial systems remain despite years of warnings.

Facebook also seems to have ignored warnings about the proliferation of Covid-19 scams on its platform; researchers this week exposed multiple scams they found on both the social media network and the messaging service Telegram.

Cyberpunk 2077 developer CD Projekt Red had already been battered by players frustrated with the game’s rampant bugs and poor gameplay on legacy consoles. This week it disclosed that ransomware was recently added to its list of woes, as a hacker group claimed to have stolen internal documents as well as source code for its most popular games. CD Projekt Red said it would not pay the ransom.

Microsoft finally patched a vulnerability that was first introduced into its Windows Defender antivirus product—recently renamed Microsoft Defender—at least 12 years ago. A barcode scanner app started serving up adware to its millions of users after an update in December. And be sure to read the third installment of 2034, the fictional tale of an all-too-real-sounding future war with China.

And there’s more! Each week we round up all the news we didn’t cover in depth. Click on the headlines to read the full stories. And stay safe out there.

Since 2014, if you were in the market for a stolen credit card or identity on the dark web—or until recently out in the open—the Joker’s Stash has been your one-stop shop. According to analysis by blockchain analysis firm Elliptic, the operator of Joker’s Stash announced that they would close up shop this month after taking in what Elliptic pegs at over a billion dollars of cryptocurrency during their run. (It’s unclear whether JokerStash, the account that runs the marketplace, is…
