Devices Sold Online Allow Thieves to Hack Into Cars in Minutes

  • Emergency start devices sold online starting at $1,600 can hack into a car through its wire network.
  • The easiest access to car wires is through the headlights, car security experts say.
  • Over 1 million vehicles were stolen in the US in 2022, marking a 7% increase over 2021.

If you find someone has been tinkering with the headlights of your car, in what seems to be a pointless, if annoying, act of vandalism, be alarmed. Someone might be trying to steal it.

That’s what automotive cybersecurity consultant Ian Tabor found out the hard way when his Toyota RAV4 got stolen shortly after he found its left headlight unplugged and the bumper around it pulled away.

Tabor, who is the leader of the UK branch of the car security web community Car Hacking Village, got together with car security expert Ken Tindell to find out how the theft happened, as Tindell recounts in a recent blog post

The pair thinks that thieves gained control of the car’s computer system by finding the internal wires easiest to access — in this case, the ones connecting the headlights to the system — and plugging a hacking device that can be easily bought online into it.

Once it’s connected to the car’s wires, the hacking device sends a signal to the engine control unit via the controller…

The persistent threat of China invading Taiwan – 60 Minutes

“This is not a matter of if they will invade, it’s a matter of when they will invade.”

That’s what Admiral Lee Hsi-min, who used to head Taiwan’s armed forces, told correspondent Lesley Stahl about China this week on 60 Minutes. Tensions between Taiwan and China have been ratcheting up recently. In August, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi visited Taiwan. China responded by carrying out its largest military drill ever.

For three days China subjected Taiwan to continuous sorties with over 100 warplanes, a barrage of ballistic missiles, and warships that encircled the island. The purpose was to deliver a loud and clear message: China could choke off Taiwan any time it wanted to.

But even with that show of force, Stahl found many in Taiwan do not share Admiral Lee’s sense of urgency.

People Stahl talked to told her over and over the military drill was “no big deal.” China has been doing it since 1949, when Mao Tse Tung won China’s civil war and the losing anti-communist side fled to the small, nearby island that is now Taiwan.

And while much of the world thought an invasion might be imminent, polls showed that a majority of Taiwanese think that is unlikely any time soon, if ever.

A big reason for that line of thinking comes from Taiwan’s manufacturing sector. The country is a tech giant, particularly in semiconductors. Taiwan is practically the world’s only source of the thinnest microchips, manufactured almost exclusively by one company: TSMC.

China relies on those chips, as does the rest of the world, for things like iPhones, advanced computers, and car components.

Morris Chang, TSMC’s 91-year-old founder, explained why some Taiwanese think the chips protect them from Xi Jinping’s attacking.

“Perhaps because our company provides a lot of chips to the world, maybe somebody will refrain from attacking it,” Chang told Stahl. “If that person’s priority is for economic well-being, I think they will refrain from attacking.”

“What if the priority is to come here and nationalize your company within’One China’?” Stahl asked.

“If there’s a war, I mean, it would be destroyed. Everything will be destroyed,” Chang said.

Twitter Data Breach, 15 Minutes to Exploit Zero-Day Vulnerabilities, Resilient Deepfake Traits

Twitter suffers a data breach of phone numbers and email addresses belonging to 5.4 million accounts, new research shows that attackers are finding and exploiting zero-day vulnerabilities in 15 minutes, and details on how a resilient trait in videos and images could aid in deepfake detection.

How to delete the last 15 minutes of your Google search history on Android

If you’ve been looking for a way to quickly delete the last 15 minutes of your Google search history on Android, your time has finally come. Jack Wallen shows you how to take care of this task.

Your privacy should be at the top of your mind any time you pick up your mobile device. So much of what you do on your phone is retained, shared, used, and (in some cases) abused. And at any moment, someone could pick up your Android phone and view anything you’ve searched for.

SEE: Mobile Device Security Policy (TechRepublic Premium)

Imagine you could very easily delete the last 15 minutes from your Google search history. Say, for instance, you were searching for a new job just before talking to your boss who happened to get a glance (for whatever reason) of your search history.

Faux. Pas.

Fortunately, Android makes it fairly easy to erase those last 15 minutes from your search history. This is a feature that’s been available on iOS for some time. Good news, Android users. Google has started rolling out that feature to its own mobile platform, so all you have to do is tap a button to clear that search history.

And I’m going to show you how it’s done.

What you’ll need

In order to enjoy this feature, you’ll need an updated version of Android. This feature shouldn’t be limited only to Pixel devices or Android 12, but (as we all know) Google can be a bit hit-and-miss about releasing features. I’m demonstrating on a Pixel 6 Pro with Android 12. If you find your device doesn’t include the feature, wait until the next update hits and check back.

With a supported device, all you have to do is open the Google app (tap Google from the App Drawer—Figure A).

When you first open that app after the feature has been added, you’ll see a popup alert indicating you can clear the last 15 minutes of Search history with one tap (Figure B).

Tap your profile pic at the top right of the window and a new pop-up will appear (Figure C).
