Ransomware group posts nude photos of cancer patients online – New York Daily News

A ransomware gang with Russian ties is accused of posting nude photos of cancer patients online after a Pennsylvania health care group declined to meet its demands.

Lehigh Valley Health Network called the cyberattack an “unconscionable criminal act” that exploits patients undergoing treatment for cancer, according to Lehigh Valley Live.

On Sunday, a Twitter feed that tracks malware said the hacker group ALPHV, also known as BlackCat, was “exploiting and sexualizing breast cancer.”

The tweet included a note, seemingly from ALPHV, telling the health care provider that its patients’ “passports, personal data, questionnaires, nude photos and the like” had been stolen. The hacker group said it was prepared to publish these materials online, and warned such a disclosure would “cause significant damage to [the provider’s] business.”

Lehigh Valley Health Network announced Thursday that it is building a new hospital in Carbon County.

In a statement, Lehigh Valley Health Network said the information hacked from its systems included a trio of screenshots containing clinically appropriate images of patients undergoing radiation oncology treatment at a facility in Scranton, Pa. The breach also reportedly included seven documents with personal information about patients.

It’s unclear how much money ALPHV was demanding. The organization is reportedly known to have asked for payments of up to $1.5 million.

Lehigh Valley Health Network said last month it experienced a cyberattack that did not interrupt operations, but warned the incursion targeted images like the ones published over the weekend. Law enforcement was made aware of the situation.

ALPHV is said to target health care and academic institutions.

Georgia station WMAZ reported Monday that a Houston County-based health care group that treats 300,000 patients a year was targeted by a ransomware attack last week, causing the health care workers to implement “back up processes.”

Further details of that attack have not been made public.

South Korea boosts laws after hacker sells nude videos from smart home devices for bitcoin

  • Hundreds of apartment buildings across the country were targeted, with compromising footage of residents’ private lives sold on the dark web
  • The incident has prompted the government to strengthen cybersecurity rules to protect residents in a country where 63 per cent of people live in flats

South Korea is reviewing online security regulations after a hacker targeted hundreds of smart home devices and sold intimate video footage of residents on the dark web in exchange for bitcoin.

Alerted by the Korea Internet Security Agency to the case, police last week launched an investigation and confirmed hacked video footage from apartments across the country were leaked online.

Thumbnail images of the video clips on the dark web showed scenes of private home life, naked bodies and sex scenes, said IT Chosun, a tech news website that exposed the hacking this month.

Hong Kong cybersecurity expert warns of risks posed by smart home devices

A reporter posing as a buyer contacted the hacker, who said in an encrypted email that it cost 0.1 bitcoin (about US$5,736) to gain video access to an apartment for 24 hours. The hacker reportedly supplied the writer a long list of flats to choose from.

Smart home features installed in Korean apartments first began as intercom systems, but grew to have expanded functions. Many new flats today have smart home devices, including wall pad door locks, lights, heaters, refrigerators, laundry machines and air conditioners that can be controlled by smartphones remotely.

Some systems include surveillance cameras, which the incident shows is vulnerable to invasion of privacy. If a hacker succeeds in breaching the security of one home, they can also access footage of neighbouring apartments connected through the building’s network, IT Chosun said.

In South Korea, 63 per cent of households live in flats.

Jennifer Lawrence is renowned for stellar roles in Hollywood blockbusters such as X Men: First Class, Passengers, and her Oscar-winning performance in the 2013 hit Silver Linings Playbook.

However, in 2014, the then 27-year-old was caught up in the devastating 4chan hacking scandal, resulting in her name being splashed across media headlines and the Internet discussing her nude body, rather than her body of work.

In the months that followed the incident, the star denounced the hack as a ‘sex crime’ and a ‘flagrant violation of privacy’.

In 2017, Chicago hacker Edward Majerczyk was sentenced to nine months in prison for illegally accessing email belonging to more than 300 people, including those of celebrities.

Opening up about the gross invasion of privacy on several occasions over the years, the actress had said that she continues to feel the effects of being exposed to the world.

Here is everything Jennifer Lawrence has ever said on the hacking scandal:

Coming to terms with the leak

In an interview with Scott Feinberg on The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter Podcast in November 2017, the actress opened up about the leak, admitting that she still hadn’t come to terms with what happened.

‘When the hacking thing happened—it was so unbelievably violating that you can’t even put into words. I think that I am still actually processing,’ she explained.

‘I feel like I got gangbanged by the f*cking planet. There was not one person in the world that is not capable of seeing these intimate photos of me.’

‘You could just be at a barbecue and someone could just pull it up on their phone.’

The Hunger Games star revealed that several women had contacted her about bringing a lawsuit against technology company Apple which later revealed hackers hadn’t penetrated its systems, as was widely believed, rather targeted ‘names, passwords and security questions’.

Despite the leak, the star decided not to sue the tech giant.

‘None of that was going to bring me peace and none of that was going to bring my nude body back to me and Nick [Holt], the…

New York Man Sentenced to 3 Years for Hacking, Stealing Nude Photos From College Students

A New York man has been sentenced to three years in prison after admitting to stealing dozens of nude photos from college students.

U.S. District Judge Mae A. D’Agostino sentenced 25-year-old Nicholas Faber, of Rochester, to 36 months behind bars on Thursday, according to the Department of Justice. Faber was also sentenced to three years of supervised release upon the completion of his prison sentence and ordered to pay over $35,000 in restitution to the State University of New York (SUNY) at Plattsburgh. He pleaded guilty to charges of computer fraud and aggravated identity theft on February 8.

Between 2017 and 2019, Faber and co-conspirator Michael Fish illegally accessed the email accounts of dozens of women who were students at SUNY Plattsburgh. The duo used information from the email accounts to gain access to the social media accounts of the women, going on to steal nude photos and videos that they later traded online. In online conversations with each other, Faber and Fish described obtaining the stolen images as “wins,” said The Press-Republican.

The email accounts were accessed after Faber and Fish correctly guessed the answers to password reset questions. They attempted to cover their tracks by using a virtual private network but were quickly tracked down during an investigation that was initiated after one of the victims noticed suspicious activity on her accounts. SUNY Plattsburgh spent over $35,000 to investigate and fix security issues after the criminal scheme was uncovered.

Faber and Fish are both graduates of SUNY Plattsburgh and knew some of their victims personally. The university contacted the women to let them know that their accounts may have been compromised. Graduate Katie Lein, who knew Fish but not Faber, told SUNY Plattsburgh student paper Cardinal Points that she was shocked to learn of the security breach even though she had not placed much trust in Fish, who…
