Activision is investigating reports of malware stealing player data

Activision is reportedly investigating the possibility of malware that’s been targeting players in Call of Duty in attempts to steal player data. At the moment it doesn’t seem to be confirmed where the malware comes from or how it’s infecting players’ PCs. However, there is talk that the malware was able to infect player PCs through the downloads of unauthorized software for use with Call of Duty.

In other words, players who had their data stolen may have been infected with the malware after downloading cheat software. First reported by TechCrunch, the main goals of these hackers aren’t yet clear. TechCrunch says the hackers were “trying to steal passwords for various types of accounts.” It’s also noted that it isn’t just passwords for gaming accounts that are being targeted. But also the passwords for crypto wallets.

Activision has acknowledged these claims and is actively looking into the situation. The company is also “aware of some claims that some player credentials across the broader industry could be compromised from malware from downloading or using unauthorized software.” It isn’t confirmed yet that these hacks were caused by the downloads of unauthorized third-party software.

Following reports of malware stealing player data, Activision says company servers are safe

The good news for legitimate players, it seems, is that Activision company servers are reportedly fine. A spokesperson for Activision Blizzard who spoke with TechCrunch says that the company servers “remain secure and uncompromised.” So it’s quite likely that only players downloading and using unauthorized third-party software have been impacted.

Call of Duty has had an ongoing issue with cheaters using third-party software to gain an advantage. Activision’s anti-cheat team has implemented a number of mitigations over the last couple of years to try and stop them. For instance, players caught using aim assist on PC through unauthorized software will have the game immediately shut down. Other mitigations cause enemy players to become invisible for those cheating, as well as make them invincible to damage.

While it hasn’t been confirmed that players…

Emotet Resurfacing as Power Player in Ransomware Wars, Avertium Warns

Avertium, a Top 250 MSSP, releases report that dives deep into the notorious Emotet botnet and warns of its criminal intent.

Avertium, a Top 250 MSSP, has released a new threat intelligence report that takes a deep dive on the notorious Emotet botnet and warns organizations of its criminal capabilities.

Emotet has a history of disappearing and re-emerging, most notably going underground following a surgical takedown in eight countries that dismantled the world’s most dangerous malware operation in January 2021. International law enforcement, including the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), gained control of Emotet’s infrastructure. This effort involved hundreds of servers located globally by taking it down from the inside and redirecting the infected machines of victims to a law enforcement environment.

Emotet has been linked to many destructive ransomware infections and associated with TrickBot, Dridex, QakBot, Conti/Ryuk, BitPaymer and REvil-associated attacks. The malware, first discovered as a banking trojan in 2014, evolved over time to become the kingpin platform for cyber hijackers.

Emotet was sold as a service to smaller operatives and criminal groups as an access key to compromised systems vulnerable to data theft and ransomware extortion. Following the law enforcement action, the syndicate disappeared for the next 10 months, but beginning in Q1 2022 reappeared with new tactics and targets.

A Deeper Dive Into Emotet

Here’s what’s new with Emotet:

  • In March 2022 during U.S. tax season, Emotet was pretending to be the IRS and sent fake tax forms and bogus federal tax returns to victims.
  • By July 2022 researchers were reporting Emotet as the top malware threat.
  • Cyber researcher AdvIntel observed a total of 1,267,598 Emotet infections worldwide so far this year. Activity from Emotet peaked between February and March 2022, kicking off during the start of the Russian-Ukraine conflict. On August 8, 2022, AdvIntel confirmed that two education entities in Kansas City were infected with the botnet. Additionally, on August 12,…

BGMI to VLC Media Player, the ‘banned’ apps or services you might still have on your phone

Back in June 2020 at the height of geopolitical tensions between China and India, the Indian Government issued a notice asking Google and Apple to take down 59 Chinese apps from their App Stores citing that the apps were “prejudicial to sovereignty and integrity of India, defence of India, security of state and public order”. Popular apps and services such as TikTok, Shein, ShareIT, UC Browser were banned in the first list, issued back in June 2020.

Since then, the list of banned apps has continued to grow and crossed over 250 apps. The latest apps which have been added to the list include the popular VLC Media player and Battlegrounds Mobile India game, which was taken down from the official stores, though the game is still working in India.

Having said that, let us take a look at some of the popular banned apps that you might still be using despite the Government’s decision to ban them. Keep in mind that for some apps there is no clarity on whether there is a ban or not.

1. Battlegrounds Mobile India (BGMI)

PlayersUnknown’s Battlegrounds Mobile or PUBG Mobile, the popular online multiplayer shooting game was initially banned in the first wave back in 2020. Two years later, Krafton, the South Korean developers behind the original game, re-launched the title under a different name – Battlegrounds Mobile India. BGMI gained a lot of popularity in India, crossing over 100 million users in just a year.

But not all was well and there were issues with data transfer. Just last month, the government issued an order and the game was pulled from Google Play Store and the Apple App Store. To date, there is still no word if BGMI is officially banned because those who have downloaded the game are still able to play. The game can also be downloaded from third-party app stores or websites on Android devices and via APK files. Till the game’s servers are taken down in India, the ban is only there partially.

2. VLC Media Player

VLC is one of the most popular media players of all time. But a few months ago, the Indian Government decided to block the VLC Media player website. Unfortunately, neither the Government nor VLC developers have shed any light as to why the app was banned. VLC…
