Vietnam’s ‘white hat’ hackers secure prestigious digital security award

Last month, Viettel Cyber Security (VCS), a unit of Viettel, one of Vietnam’s largest state-owned enterprises, received thrilling news: they emerged as champions in the esteemed cybersecurity competition Pwn2Own Toronto 2023.

At the close of the competition on the evening of October 27, Viettel’s VCS team clinched the championship with an impressive total score of 30 points, earning them the distinguished title of ‘Master of Pwn’ and outpacing competitors by a significant margin of 12.75 points.

The total score was calculated based on successful participation and assigned Master of Pwn points in the competition’s category tables.

Pwn2Own 2023 was hosted by Toronto, Canada from October 24 to 27.

A team of young achievers

The sweet taste of success embraced the 14 young members of the team after three months of relentless dedication, working day and night, and competing fiercely against rivals worldwide.

Perhaps surprising to many, the youngest member, Do Anh Dung, a third-year student from the University of Engineering and Technology under the Vietnam National University-Hanoi, was born in 2003.

Beyond the youthfulness of Dung, the other 13 members of VCS, who achieved significant success at Pwn2Own 2023, are also young.

Despite their tender age, each team member boasts considerable experience in cybersecurity, cultivated over years of dedicated work.

Even the youngest, Dung, made a noteworthy contribution, securing a victory in one of the competition categories, aiding in the team’s triumph.

On the evening of October 27, VCS secured the final victory, surpassing formidable opponents such as Sea Security from Singapore, Vupen and Synacktiv from France, and last year’s winners Devcore from Taiwan.

Ha Anh Hoang, a VCS team member, told Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper that they were informed about the devices they had to compromise only three months before the contest’s opening day.

This meant a tight preparation schedule, including purchasing new devices, exploring their hardware and software, and awaiting the arrival of some tools ordered from abroad, which took up to a month.

Nguyen Xuan Hoang, another team member, acknowledged the presence of…

An Edmonton soldier has been awarded the U.S. Defence Meritorious Service medal for his five years of work with the North American Aerospace Defence Command.

Master Warrant Officer Patrick Love held multiple positions while at NORAD, a joint bi-national command with the U.S. Northern Command, from 2015-2020.

“It was pretty exciting, actually, because not everybody receives this medal and it’s one of the higher-ranked American awards. So, it was an honour to get it as a Canadian,” said Love of the award issued by the United States Department of Defence.

The 57-year-old said NORAD conducts aerospace warning, aerospace control and maritime warning in the defence of North America. Love looked after the cyber domain for training and headed the 24-hour crew at NORAD. The agency is based in Colorado Springs, Colo.

Love said his stint at NORAD was during a key time in the evolution of cyber warfare, a growing threat in which computers and information technology are used as weapons.

“For myself, it was a lot of learning new things. The cyber realm is fairly new to the Canadian Forces, the Americans are a little bit further ahead, but for myself it was a very steep learning curve, but I did learn a lot and enjoyed working there,” he said.

Love is now posted to the Canadian Manoeuvre Training Centre in Wainwright, Alta. as the sergeant major.

The training centre conducts exercises such Maple Resolve, a large and complex operation of the army involving multiple units.

“What we do is we go out and we observe and give recommendations on how to better what they’re doing, with the end goal of course preparing them to be able to deploy outside of Canada on any mission the Canadian government would choose to send us on,” he said.

Four generations of Love’s family have served in the army. He followed his grandfather and parents into the service, and his son has also signed up. He said his family was excited and proud of him for receiving the U.S. award.

Originally from Toronto, Love said he bought a retirement property and will eventually be making Morinville his home.

Computer Science freshman awarded prestigious DoD SMART Scholarship

Jacob Roberts, a freshman in Louisiana Tech University’s Computer Science program, has been selected for a prestigious U.S. Department of Defense Science, Mathematics, and Research for Transformation Scholarship (DoD SMART Scholarship).

Jacob RobertsThe DoD SMART Scholarship provides academically successful students with full tuition for up to five years, summer internship opportunities, a stipend, and full-time employment with the Department of Defense after graduation. This unique opportunity offers students hands-on experience at one of more than 200 of the nation’s most innovative laboratories across the Department of Defense. In addition, during summer internships, SMART Scholars work directly with experienced mentors on defense-related projects, gaining valuable technical skills.

“I am so honored to be given this opportunity,” he said, “and I can’t wait to see what possibilities arise in the future during my time at Louisiana Tech and during my SMART internships.”

By the time he begins his first internship in summer 2022, Roberts expects to have a solid background in computer science and cyber security methods from his coursework.

“As a freshman, my classmates and I have already learned the basics of computer science and cyber security and how to apply them to real-life situations. In addition, we have the skills to apply theory to real-world threats because of the Living with Cyber freshman series that Louisiana Tech offers first-year computer science and cyber engineering students. We work hands-on, coding and building with Raspberry Pi systems beginning in our first fall quarter in the programs.

“Another reason that I feel prepared for a career in cyber security is that professors in the computer science and cyber engineering programs give each student personalized attention since the classes are small. I’m able to ask questions and get answers in a way that might not be possible in a larger class. Mr. [Kyle] Prather [adjunct instructor of computer science and creative development director of the Thingery at Louisiana Tech] made it his mission to make sure that every student in my freshman series classes learned the basic theory and skills.”
