SecurityGen identifies the cybersecurity priorities for mobile operators in 2023, Security

Rome, Italy – SecurityGen, the award-winning global provider of security solutions and services for the telecoms industry, today announced its cybersecurity priorities for telecom operators in 2023.

“As 5G’s global footprint increases, the number of cyber threats targeting 5G increases as well,” said SecurityGen co-founder and CTO Dmitry Kurbatov. “In 2023, operators must be aware of the range of these threats and take necessary steps to properly defend their networks, protect their customers, and safeguard their operations and revenue.”

Kurbatov identifies the main factors shaping the risks and threats that operators must prepare for in the year ahead as follows:

1) 5G-related challenges

  • 5G is open for integration – but also open to attack

  • Unlike previous mobile network generations like 3G and LTE, 5G is designed from the ground up to be flexible and open for integration with multiple external systems. However, the same open architecture that enables this flexibility and easy integration can also make 5G vulnerable and exposed to threats and hidden vulnerabilities.

    The challenge for operators is to maximise 5G’s advanced functionality and interoperability while also recognising this vulnerability and minimising the threats arising from 5G’s extra openness compared to previous network generations.


  • Beware of roaming traffic from non-standalone 5G

  • As operators deploy more 5G networks and more users purchase 5G smartphones, the volume of roaming traffic between 5G networks increases. But the majority of this extra roaming traffic goes through non-standalone 5G networks which still use unsecure legacy technology for their core networks, including signalling protocols such as GTP and Diameter, which have proven to be hackable in recent years.

    Without proper security measures in place, 5G is vulnerable to threats originating from non-5G networks carried in non-5G network traffic – but which are able to damage and disrupt 5G services.

 

2) Cyberattacks from hostile states and organised crime

Cybersecurity needs to be one of India’s topmost priorities for long term growth: Leaders at Microsoft’s ‘Future of Security’ Roundtable

As we navigate an increasingly complex, boundaryless hybrid world, cybersecurity has never been more critical. With cyberattacks growing in size, scale and sophistication, cybersecurity becomes mission-critical for protecting individuals, businesses, and governments.

Against this backdrop, and as part of Cybersecurity Awareness Month, Microsoft hosted a Future of Security curated dialogue with industry experts, on building India’s cyber resilience. Terence Gomes, Country Head – Security, Microsoft India, was in conversation with Seema Khanna, Deputy Director General, National Informatics Centre (NIC), Government of India, Rama Vedashree, Former CEO, Data Security Council of India (DSCI), and Satish Kumar Dwibhashi, SVP and CISO, InMobi, on the evolution of the cybersecurity landscape and the need for public-private partnerships to protect India at scale.

Trust in technology, need for stronger collaboration between the public and private sectors, driving consumer awareness, and the role of secure, trusted, ethical tech in driving innovation for India were some of the topics that were discussed.

Anchoring these discussions, Microsoft shared its commitment to building a trusted tech ecosystem in the country, making available the technology and threat intelligence expertise required to protect against cyber threats.

Trust in technology

Seema Khanna: “Trust in technology cannot work in silos, they go hand-in-hand. Earning trust is easy, but we only get one shot at it. Both as government and industry, we must navigate earning the trust from users. For this, we need to have an enabling framework for services. Security must be by design and every service we provide needs to be built with trust, especially in the hybrid world.”

Satish Kumar Dwibhashi: “We are living in a digital world. So, digital trust is a necessity. It is no longer a choice, but imperative in today’s world.”

Shaheen Announces More Than $89M for Key NH Projects & Priorities in New Government Funding Proposal

**A senior member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, Shaheen worked to include federal support for a myriad of NH projects in the proposal released by Senate Democrats, including expanding access to health care, updating water infrastructure, increasing affordable housing and more.** 

(Washington, DC) – U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH), a senior member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, announced that a government funding proposal for fiscal year (FY) 2023 released last week by Senate Democrats includes $89,126,000 for 95 New Hampshire projects, which she helped secure. The robust federal dollars, appropriated through the Congressionally Directed Spending (CDS) process, invest in a range of Granite State priorities throughout the state, including water infrastructure, health care facility investments, educational training, resources to combat homelessness and food insecurity, support for substance use disorder programs and much more. 

In addition to the CDS listed below, Shaheen announced last week numerous Granite State priorities she fought to include in the Commerce, Justice, Science and Related Agencies (CJS) funding legislation released, which Shaheen spearheads as Chair of the subcommittee. She also announced 23 of the 95 New Hampshire projects that she secured funding for through the CJS subcommittee. 

“The Congressionally Directed Spending process is a crucial opportunity to ensure small states like New Hampshire aren’t shortchanged the resources we deserve, particularly as we continue to grapple with the fallout from the pandemic.
