Reach for control to enhance security in the cloud

Cloud-based infrastructure and services have changed the way IT practitioners design enterprise systems.

These changes offer enterprises significant security benefits and pose serious security threats.

Enterprises must take a proactive approach to reap the rewards and reduce the risk. Today, on National Computer Security Day, I’m sharing what you can do (and what you need to consider) to improve your security posture in the cloud.

Beginning with the benefits

For starters, most cloud-based SaaS offerings include an outsourced platform infrastructure. A third party often manages the service, handling operations and system maintenance. Outsourcing allows enterprises to delegate risk and take advantage of shared responsibility models. There’s some loss of configuration flexibility, but much to gain in security.

Large cloud providers have a dizzying array of security and compliance documentation, audit results, and certificates. These cover everything from the physical infrastructure facilities to their processes and technical implementations.

Software-defined networks allow enterprises to segment infrastructure without paying for physical switches and firewalls. Enterprises enjoy in-depth protection around critical resources at a fraction of the cost.

Virtualized computing and pre-packaged virtual machines allow for easy integration of security solutions and tooling for functions such as intrusion detection, application proxies, network management, and name resolution.

Platform-provided storage supports encryption at rest. It also allows fine-grained configuration of keys and permissions as appropriate for each dataset.

Adapting to a cloud-based IT world

Deploying cloud-based services challenges organizations to unlearn established security orthodoxy. Before the cloud, corporate security infrastructure protected every service by default. Enterprises assumed that each resource had its proper place in the logical network architecture. Public access to critical resources was strictly controlled. Unspooling these predispositions is hard, but it’s necessary and there are guidelines that can help.

Ransomware attacks increasing in frequency, spreading in reach | Local

Ransomware attacks, like the one that cost Hanesbrands Inc. about $100 million in second-quarter sales, are increasing in frequency among corporations facing uncertain prospects of a complete restoration and recovery.

Ransomware is a type of malicious software employed by hackers that can block access to a computer system until a ransom is paid.

The Winston-Salem-based apparel manufacturer reported in a May 31 regulatory filing that it began experiencing the ransomware attack on May 24.

Hanesbrands disclosed Aug. 11 in its second-quarter earnings report that its global supply chain network and ability to fulfill customer orders were affected for about three weeks.

“At this time, we believe the incident has been contained,” the manufacturer said in a separate quarterly regulatory filing Aug. 11.

Network Security Firewall Market

Increase in awareness about data security and privacy presents new opportunities in the coming years.

PORTLAND, PORTLAND, OR , UNITED STATES , August 19, 2022 /EINPresswire.com/ — Surge in demand for network security and privacy and rise in number of cyber-based attacks and frauds drive the growth of the global network security firewall market.

The global network security firewall industry generated $3.48 billion in 2020, and is estimated to generate $24.34 billion by 2030, witnessing a CAGR of 21.6% from 2020 to 2030.

Based on deployment type, the on premise segment accounted for the largest share in 2020, contributing to more than half of the global network security firewall market, and is projected to maintain its lead position during the forecast period. This is due to advancements in on premise technologies and adoption of new IoT-based techniques and competition among SMEs. However, the cloud segment is expected to portray the largest CAGR of 23.6% from 2021 to 2030, owing to cost efficiency, importance of cybersecurity, and highly automated nature of cloud security.

How Argentina’s Iplan plans to reach 1mn homes passed in 2023

How Argentina's Iplan plans to reach 1mn homes passed in 2023

Argentine telecommunications company Iplan is pushing ahead with a deployment rate that will allow it to close next year with more than 1mn homes passed with fiber optics in four cities.

The company started out as a corporate provider focused on medium-sized businesses but now 15% of revenues come from the residential segment. It offers broadband through fiber optics and will incorporate new services for this segment.

It also opened its infrastructure so that other providers can use it under the wholesale model.

It recently began offering over-the-top TV through an alliance with DirecTV and the next move will be security and home automation services.

BNamericas interviewed Iplan’s CEO, Damián Maldini, about his plans for network deployment, new services and investments.

BNamericas: How are you progressing with the infrastructure expansion?

Maldini: We now have four cities with large networks: CABA [Buenos Aires city], Córdoba, Rosario and [San Miguel de] Tucumán.

Tucumán is the most recent: we just started providing services there this month. The first stage involved 200 blocs. In the next 30 to 60 days we will enable another 200.

In Tucumán we are going to follow the same logic as we did in Buenos Aires, Córdoba and Rosario. We are building in the downtown area with the highest density of homes.

If all goes well, by the end of next year we will have a million homes passed in these four cities.

There are actually more, but a million are those that are ready to be connected within a maximum period of 24 hours, which is how long the commercial process takes.

We should have 10 times more network compared to four years ago.

In the corporate field, we are also doing extensions. We are now going to cover the area of Vicente López [Buenos Aires province] and in Tucumán we also have aerial lines for corporate areas.

This is the fifth year that we have an investment between US$15mn and 20mn for network deployment. The idea is to keep this pace.

BNamericas: Argentina has restrictions on access to dollars and imports. Has this presented any difficulties?

Maldini: Until now, no, there were no difficulties in accessing equipment. Yes, there is bureaucracy due to the…
