Cleveland City Schools reports ransomware attempt on devices

CLEVELAND, Tennessee (WDEF) – Officials with the Cleveland City Schools say they are working on a ransomware case involving system devices.

They became aware of the attack on Tuesday.

In a statement, officials say less than 5 percent of their school devices were actually affected and none of them are student devices.

And they do not believe any personal information has been compromised.

“We want to assure you that sensitive information, including PowerSchool data, is secure off-site.”

The school system is continuing to check to see if any data has been removed from the system, but, so far, they have not found any missing data.

Atomic Wallet hack losses top $35M, on-chain sleuth reports

At least $35 million worth of crypto assets have been stolen from Atomic Wallet users since June 2, according to an analysis from on-chain sleuth ZachXBT. The five largest losses account for $17 million.

According to Atomic Wallet on Twitter, the cause of the attack is being investigated. Reports have surfaced of tokens being lost, transaction histories being erased, and even entire crypto portfolios being stolen.

An independent investigation carried out by pseudonymous Twitter ZachXBT, known for tracing crypto stolen funds and assisting hacked projects, has found the largest victim lost $7.95 million in Tether (USDT). “Think it could surpass $50m. Keep finding more and more victims, sadly,” commented ZachXBT.

Atomic Wallet claims to have over 5 million users around the world. Cointelegraph spoke with a long-time Atomic’s client who is now a victim of the security breach. “I felt terrible because I am a cybersecurity expert by profession,” said Emre, a Turkish resident who lost nearly $1 million in crypto assets received from bug bounty programs. His stolen tokens include Bitcoin (BTC), Dogecoin (DOGE), Litecoin (LTC), Ethereum (ETH), USDT, USD Coin (USDC), Binance Coin (BNB), and Polygon (MATIC).

“They say they’re looking into it, but they don’t have anything concrete yet,” Emre continued. The funds held at Atomic Wallet were destined for the establishment of a cybersecurity firm in Turkey.

Atomic is a noncustodial-decentralized wallet, meaning users are responsible for assets stored in the application. As usual, its Terms of Service do not accept any liability for on-chain damages suffered by users. “Under no circumstances will Atomic Wallet be liable to you for damages arising out of the services exceeding $50,” says one excerpt.

National Cybersecurity Center reports increase in ransomware a…

AMMAN — Bassam Maharmeh, the president of the National Cybersecurity Center, announced on Friday that the number of cybersecurity
incidents targeting government institutions and vital sectors in Jordan last
year reached 1,326. اضافة اعلان

Maharmeh added that 2 percent of these attacks were deemed
“very dangerous,” Al-Mamlaka TV reported.

Maharmeh also noted that there had been a significant increase
in ransomware attacks during the second half of last year. Ransomware is a type
of malicious software that threatens to publish the victim’s data or block
access to it unless a ransom is paid.

Report to follow
The
National Cybersecurity Center is responsible for protecting government networks
and vital sectors, such as communications, electricity, and national
security-related sectors, from cyberattacks, said Maharmeh.

He added that the center will soon publish a detailed report on
the most prominent cybersecurity incidents that occurred in Jordan last year.

Vulnerabilities
in VMware esxi systems
Earlier
this year, the center warned of a security vulnerability that may expose
devices to ransomware attacks.

The center explained that the security
vulnerability targets systems that operate on the VMware esxi system, allowing
ransomware programs such as “ESXiArs” to exploit the vulnerability
and encrypt sensitive data, demanding a ransom payment in exchange for the
decryption key.

As a
preventative measure, the center advises users of systems operating on the
VMware ESXi system to update to the latest version as soon as possible to
address this security vulnerability and protect their systems from ransomware
programs.

Additionally, the center recommends implementing strong access
controls and authentication procedures, regularly backing up important data and
storing backups off-site, and training employees on best cybersecurity
practices.
