Ah, the dreaded airport security line — a place where dreams of early gate arrival are crushed and flights are missed. Even though you may have packed your bag like a pro, checked in early, and downloaded your boarding pass, the security line can still trash your savvy travel prep like that bottle of water you accidentally left in your bag. But there’s a way to avoid the hurt, hack the system, and breeze through like a VIP.

Yes, there are apps for checking wait times so you can budget your time appropriately, including an official one from the Transportation Security Administration. But true travel pros know that the best way to expedite the airport security process is to reserve your spot in line.

How to reserve your spot in the security line

Clear, a travel tech company that uses biometric ID verification to expedite the security process, has a tool called Reserve. Get started by going to https://www.clearme.com/reserve on your computer or mobile and select the airport you’re flying from. How far in advance you can reserve a spot depends on the airport, which can be found on the airport’s website.

Reserve powered by Clear is available in 15 airports in North America and Europe: Calgary, Charleston, Edmonton, Los Angeles, Miami, New York, Newark, Orlando, Phoenix, Seattle, Toronto, Vancouver, Amsterdam, Berlin, and Munich. These cover many of the major travel hubs, but Reserve is planning to roll out in more cities, so don’t worry if none of these are close to you. That will eventually change.

Click on the airport you’re departing from, and you’ll then be directed to a new page where you’ll need to fill out your flight info, including the date of departure, destination, airline, and flight number.

Next, select the number of people you’ll be traveling with — up to 10 people.

Then, choose from a list of 15-minute time slots for your reservation. Note: Reserve will hold your spot for 15 minutes before or after your reservation time, so you have some wiggle room if you show up early or you’re running late.

Guard, Reserve Component Summit Exemplifies ‘Cyber Is a Team Sport’

Senior leaders from around the U.S. Cyber Command enterprise attended a summit on April 19 at the command’s headquarters to discuss the future of cyber operations, evolving capabilities, and deeper integration.

The gathering was conducted both in-person and virtually, bringing together Reserve Component leadership and Service Cyber Component commanders to highlight current contributions, challenges, and strategies within the cyber environment, while focusing on increased integration and collaboration.

During the event, leaders engaged in a roundtable discussion covering three topics: increasing Reserve Component cyber capacity/capabilities, operations in the information environment, and intelligence operations relating to cyber.

Gen. Paul Nakasone, CYBERCOM commander and National Security Agency/Central Security Service director, discussed the value of the Total Force during his opening remarks at the event. He said that protecting the nation against malicious cyber activity is a whole-of-nation effort involving partners from industry, academia, interagency, and the Guard and Reserve.

While each component brings a unique aspect to the cyber fight, it is the partnerships of the Total Force that gives America’s cyber warriors an advantage.

The benefit of Guard and Reserve teammates is they often bring skillsets from their civilian careers, which can boost innovation. This expertise, coupled with their ability to easily support their home states and work within existing partnership programs, brings a valuable dynamic to the cyber defense of the nation.

“Cyber warfare is not just our future—it is our contemporary reality,” said Gen. Hokanson, Chief, National Guard Bureau. “The National Guard is positioned to be leaders in the digital domain, and continues to enhance our nation’s cyber capabilities in combat and in the homeland.

“With 4,000 National Guard cyber operators across 40 states, many working for leading tech companies, the National Guard has the knowledge, skills, and abilities to play a critical role in the DoD’s cyber enterprise,” he added.

Fight over emergency Federal Reserve powers stalls $900 billion aid plan

WASHINGTON >> An arcane battle over emergency Federal Reserve powers foiled efforts today to lock down an agreement on an almost $1 trillion COVID-19 economic relief package. Today’s deadlock was just the latest stumble in a partisan, months-long fight over pandemic relief and the lack of progress is backing lawmakers once again up against a government shutdown deadline Sunday night.

Lawmakers on both sides said a provision by Sen. Pat Toomey, R-Pa., that would curb emergency Federal Reserve powers was the sticking point. Republicans are insisting on the Toomey plan, while Democrats are adamantly against it. A compromise was proving elusive, but communications channels are open, as key lawmakers convened in scrums on the Senate floor and as Toomey and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., met to exchange ideas.

“I think that we should be able to get a deal done,” Toomey said afterward.

“I think they agreed to go back and write down what they were saying, so everybody can read it and exchange paper,” said Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas.

The latest pratfall likely upends hopes for a House vote Sunday and quick Senate action on an agreement that’s virtually ready save for Toomey’s provision.

“That has to be resolved. And then everything will fall into place,” said House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif. “It’s a very significant difference.”

A new deadline of midnight Sunday for a government shutdown served as a backstop for the tortuous negotiations, which were being conducted in secret largely among the top four leaders in Congress.

“We need to conclude our talks, draft legislation, and land this plane,” said Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell.

Toomey defended his controversial provision in a floor speech, saying the emergency powers were designed to stabilize capital markets at the height of the COVID panic this spring and are expiring at the end of the month anyway. The language would block the Biden administration from restarting them.
