iPhone Hacking: Notice sent to Apple, CERT-In has started probe: IT Secretary on hacking attempt threat notification row

iPhone Hacking: The government’s cybersecurity agency CERT-In has started its investigation into the issue of the Apple threat notification received by several opposition MPs, and a notice has been sent to the company, IT Secretary S Krishnan said on Thursday.

The move assumes significance as the Minister of State for Electronics and IT Rajeev Chandrasekhar had earlier this week said that the government wants Apple to clarify if its devices are secure and why ‘threat notifications’ were sent to people in over 150 countries, given the company’s repeated claims about its products being designed for privacy.

The government will investigate the threat notifications and also Apple’s claims of being secure and privacy-compliant devices, Chandrasekhar had penned in a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Tuesday, after several opposition leaders claimed ‘state-sponsored’ attack notification were sent to them from Apple and the government ordered a probe.

IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has categorically rejected the opposition’s attack on the government, saying “compulsive critics” were indulging in the politics of “distraction”, as they could not tolerate the country’s progress under the PM’s Narendra Modi leadership.
On Thursday, S Krishnan, Secretary, IT Ministry confirmed that notice has been sent to Apple.

“CERT-In has started its probe… They (Apple) will cooperate in this probe,” Krishnan told reporters on the sidelines of an event related to the Meity-NSF research collaboration.

Indian Computer Emergency Response Team or CERT-In is the national nodal agency for responding to computer security incidents as and when they occur.

Asked if a notice has been sent to Apple, the IT Secretary answered in the affirmative. Apple did not reply to an email by PTI seeking comments on the notice.

Several opposition leaders on Tuesday claimed they have received an alert from Apple warning them of “state-sponsored attackers trying to remotely compromise” their iPhones and alleged hacking by the government.

Those who received such notifications included Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge, party leaders Shashi Tharoor, Pawan Khera, K C Venugopal, Supriya Shrinate, T S Singhdeo and Bhupinder S Hooda; Trinamool…

Malwarebytes Awarded Highest Rated Endpoint Protection for Seven Quarters in a Row

Rigorous tests by third-party research lab MRG Effitas demonstrate superior ability to detect and block real-world threats

SANTA CLARA, Calif., June 22, 2023 /PRNewswire/ — Malwarebytes, a global leader in real-time cyber protection, today announced that MRG Effitas, a world leader in independent IT research, gave Malwarebytes Endpoint Protection (EP) the highest possible score (100%) in its endpoint security efficacy assessment. As of the latest Q1 2023 test results, Malwarebytes is the only vendor to win every MRG Effitas certification and award for the seventh consecutive quarter, outperforming other solutions in its ability to spot and stop zero-day threats, ransomware, banking malware, fileless attacks and exploits. Centered around nine rounds of rigorous testing, MRG Effitas’ assessment criteria are the best way to evaluate endpoint security vendors today.

Malwarebytes’ consistent high performance underscores our ability to spot and stop known threats as well as zero-day and polymorphic malware,” said Joe Hartmann, Senior Director of Threat Labs, Malwarebytes. “For under-resourced organizations that need endpoint security that just works, these results are a powerful tool to help them select the right protection for their business. Malwarebytes’ focus on leveraging machine learning and AI to automatically create detections means our solutions benefit from the speed and vast data consumption possible with these technologies. MRG Effitas’ quarterly testing alongside its new real-time testing solution Tempus, helps Malwarebytes’ protection stay ahead of the curve.”

MRG Effitas is an independent research and testing lab that evaluates endpoint protection solutions. Pixel April 2023 update is late, marking second delay in a row

Historically, Pixel security patches are released on the first Monday of the month at 10 a.m. PT. Following last month’s situation, Google has yet to release the April 2023 update for the Pixel 4a to 7 Pro.

As Monday winds down, the company has yet to post a “Google Pixel Update – April 2023” changelog, detail the “Pixel Update Bulletin—April 2023,” or release full Factory/OTA Images.

The “Android Security Bulletin—April 2023” was released at the usual time, but carriers (Verizon) have yet to detail.

We’re not expecting the April security patch to be a big upgrade since Android 13 QPR2 rolled out last month. At best, there should be a handful of functional updates and other fixes. (The next Feature Drop/QPR3 is expected in June, with testing already underway.)

It comes as one user last week received an April 5, 2023 security update on their Pixel 5 ahead of schedule. That was a one-off incident with no other reports (possibly internal testing), but it did reveal a build number that suggested nothing significant is likely to change.

There’s no obvious reason for the update to not be released today (i.e., Monday isn’t a public holiday in the US). The last notable delay was in August 2022, when Google did not roll out an update on schedule because it was waiting for Android 13, which received a mid-month launch. Before that, the Pixel 6 series was not updated at the same time as older phones, with Tensor likely at fault.

Google never explained why the updates were delayed last month, and the company didn’t provide any guidance when we asked today about April.

Meanwhile, the Pixel Watch has yet to see its April 2023 update. Google has been updating the wearable on the same day/schedule as its phone. Last month’s sizable Pixel Watch release widely rolled out as part of the second wave alongside the Pixel 6, 6 Pro, and 6a.

Hopefully, the April delay is not as significant as last month’s, and this doesn’t become a habit for Google.

Michael Chandler and Dustin Poirier were separated by security following a heated exchange at UFC 276 on Saturday night.

Michael Chandler and Dustin Poirier were separated by security following a heated exchange

A video of the pair was recorded by a fan and put online. In the clip, Poirier was heard blasting Chandler by shouting ‘You’re a fake mother*****r, I’m gonna f**k you up.’

Security inside the arena made sure that the two rivals were kept a safe distance from each other as they exchanged insults.

UFC CEO Hunter Campbell was also present during the argument but he seemed to be enjoying the altercation. He was seen smiling as the two of the biggest superstars of the 155-pound division kicked off at each other.

The beef between the pair began when Chandler failed to mention Poirier’s name when he was calling out fighters following his victory over Tony Ferguson.

The Iron then added insult to injury by belittling Poirier during an interview – claiming he is ‘not a big draw’ before calling him a quitter.

Poirier hit back and Chandler for disrespecting him. He said: ‘You think the guy [Chandler] forgot about me? The route to the title shot?

‘I’m number one [Oliveira as de-facto champion]. Yeah, and who’s a draw? Bro, I’m not that guy to pick on people and do this and stuff like that, but if we go to the numbers which don’t lie, you were supporting cast in the last pay-per-view you fought…
