Android Phones Shipping with Pre-Installed Malware – Global Village Space

Trend Micro, a cybersecurity research firm, has discovered a supply chain attack that has infected millions of Android devices with infostealer malware before they even leave the factory. The majority of the affected devices are budget smartphones, but the attack has also spread to smartwatches, smart TVs, and other smart devices. Senior Trend Micro researcher Fyodor Yarochkin and his colleague Zhengyu Dong spoke about this issue at a conference in Singapore, noting that the root of the problem lies in the fierce competition among original equipment manufacturers.

The issue stems from the fact that smartphone makers are not building all of the components themselves. For example, firmware is being built by third-party firmware suppliers. However, as the price of mobile phone firmware continued to drop, the providers were unable to charge money for their products. As a result, Yarochkin explained, the products started coming with an unwanted extra in the form of “silent plugins.” Trend Micro found dozens of firmware images looking for malicious software and 80 different plugins. Some plugins were part of a wider “business model” that was sold on dark web forums and even marketed on mainstream social media platforms and blogs.

These plugins are capable of stealing sensitive information from the device, stealing SMS messages, taking control of social media accounts, using the devices for ad and click fraud, abusing traffic, and more. One of the more serious problems is a plugin that allows the buyer to take full control of a device for up to five minutes and use it as an “exit node.”

Trend Micro says that close to nine million devices worldwide are affected by this supply chain attack, the majority of which are located in Southeast Asia and Eastern Europe. The researchers did not name the perpetrators, but they did mention China a few times.

This supply chain attack is a worrying development in the world of cybersecurity. It highlights the need for companies to be vigilant when it comes to their supply chains and to ensure that all components are thoroughly vetted before they are used in their products. It also underscores the importance of using…

Royal Mail restores global shipping weeks after LockBit ransomware attack

U.K. postal giant Royal Mail says it has finally restored international shipping after a ransomware attack downed its export services for over a month.

Royal Mail spokesperson Mark Street told TechCrunch on Thursday that it has reinstated international export services to all destinations for purchase online and at Post Office branches. “We are now processing close to normal daily volumes of international export mail with some delays,” Street said. In an incident update dated February 23, Royal Mail noted a “small number” of international untracked services for business contract customers continue to face some disruption.

Royal Mail faced severe disruption for six weeks after a January 10 cyberattack left the company unable to dispatch certain items overseas. While the organization had reinstated most online services in recent weeks, Royal Mail could not, until now, process international parcels at its 11,500 Post Office branches.

According to the BBC, Royal Mail ships to 231 countries and territories worldwide and shipped more than 150 million parcels overseas in the past year.

Royal Mail’s long-awaited service update comes as the Russia-linked LockBit ransomware gang, whose high-profile victims have also included NHS vendor Advanced, published some of the data it stole from Royal Mail on its dark web leak site. The prolific ransomware gang initially threatened to publish all stolen data on February 9.

The 45 gigabyte data dump published by LockBit, reviewed by TechCrunch, doesn’t appear to include sensitive customer or financial information, though it does contain at least one employee’s COVID-19 vaccination details.

“Royal Mail is aware that an unauthorized third-party has published some data allegedly obtained from our network,” Street told TechCrunch. “At this stage of the investigation, we believe that the vast majority of this data is made up of technical program files and administrative business data. All of the evidence suggests that this data contains no financial information or other sensitive customer information. We continue to work closely with law enforcement agencies.”

Earlier this week, LockBit published what it claimed…

11th Gen Intel® Core™ i5-1135G7 Processor Benchmark

Intel Core i5-115G7 benchmarks

Neowin can’t vouch for this laptop in any way. We are simply reporting on the fact it looks like the specifications are good for the price.

On a personal note, I’ve recommended similar Gateway laptops from Walmart (i3, 8 GB, 250 GB SSD) and they run great, with minimal bloat. Most of the preinstalled apps consisted of a game on the desktop, Norton internet security, and Firefox.

Large Deployment Expected to Begin in July

Detroit, Michigan, June 22, 2022 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Artificial Intelligence Technology Solutions, Inc., (OTCPK:AITX), today announced that its wholly owned subsidiary Robotic Assistance Devices, Inc. (RAD) has received a Letter of Intent from a regional casino operator for large quantity of RAD devices. The expected receipt of this order had been previously acknowledged in a press release in late April of this year.

The Company stated that the Letter of Intent is for a minimum of 12 ROSA security units, 1 SCOT stationary tower, and 1 ROAMEO mobile security robot. The agreement is structured as to allow the client to increase the number of units on order without the need to re-engage their purchasing process. It is expected that deployments will begin in July 2022. The client may choose to be identified in the future as well as participate in a case study since the RAD devices will be in public view.

“Persistence pays off. At RAD we grind until we get the win,” said Mark Folmer, President of RAD. “This client has certainly done their due diligence. I have great respect for their partner qualification process. We’ve gone through similar procedures to ensure that every box is checked when a client is looking at RAD.”

“This is going to be such a great deployment,” said Steve Reinharz, CEO of AITX and RAD. “It’s a picture-perfect commercial deployment, with multiple ROSAs keeping an eye on the facility and their guests, a SCOT at the main entrance providing valuable information and security, plus a ROAMEO on patrol between the parking structure and the front entrance. We expect that these quantities could double in the coming months, at this one location.”

RAD’s parent company AITX has filed for uplisting to the OTCQB. Future announcements will be made regarding the status of the OTCQB application.

ROSA is a compact, self-contained, portable, security and communication solution that can be deployed in about 15 minutes. Like other RAD solutions, it only requires power as it includes all necessary…
