Sunbird iMessage for Android Returns After Shutting Down Due to Security Issues : Tech : Tech Times

Sunbird is returning to bring iMessage to Android after the company shut down its services due to security issues.

The last time it was available, the company partnered with Nothing for the service known as ‘Nothing Chats,’ another iMessage for Android service that promised blue bubbles but faced massive security issues.

The company promises that the experience will be returned soon for all to enjoy.

According to their latest press release, they will start with a beta release for everyone to try, which already features several fixes, enhancements, and improvements compared to its initial run.

From its earlier AV1 iMessage architecture, the company has developed its better and new take on this implementation, the AV2. It is now focused on improving user privacy and uses an MQTTS message broker, an OASIS standard for secure messaging.

Sunbird promises that when the decrypted message is passed to the iMessage and RCS/Google Messages Network, it will only exist in memory for a brief time.

Sunbird’s Shut Down and Security Issues

In 2022, Sunbird was among the first to bring iMessage for Android and promised this experience for all, after which it was made partner by Nothing Chats to bring the same experience for its app.

However, many security issues were found, including privacy problems wherein the messages were stored in the Firebase Database, unencrypted HTTP API Calls, and more.

Now, the company is looking to fix all this, make it more secure, and roll it out gradually to users who have signed up (with the waitlist still open for those who want to join it via this link), with Sunbird sending out invitations to accepted ones.

iMessage for Android’s Interconnectivity

Last year, there came a massive wave of companies looking to bring the iMessage service for Android, and this was amidst the sparking conversations regarding Apple’s reluctance to adopt RCS.

Among the many companies to do this, the first was Sunbird, followed by Nothing Chats via a…

3G networks shutting down in 2022 could affect your car’s GPS

The 3G wireless network was once among the world’s hottest innovations. Today, it feels old-fashioned with fifth-generation (5G), and even sixth-generation (6G), networks soon dominating the tech world.

In fact, 3G will soon be extinct — and that could mean bad news for your car.

Every major mobile carrier plans to shut down its 3G network this year, largely to free up mobile bandwidth for upcoming 5G network rollouts. If your smartphones and tablets were purchased within the past decade, they should have 4G capability, meaning they’ll likely be unaffected.

However, your car might be a different story.

As multiple auto blogs have pointed out recently, the 3G shutdown will affect dozens of vehicle models released anytime between 2010 and 2021. Some cars will lose the ability to update your location and traffic data while navigating. Others will become unable to connect with your smartphone, voice assistants or emergency call services.

If you’re driving certain models from Honda, Nissan or Volvo, you might need to act before AT&T’s 3G shutdown date in February. Verizon-aligned brands like Toyota and Lexus might have more time: Verizon says its 3G shutdown will happen “no later” than December 31. T-Mobile plans to shut down its Sprint and T-Mobile 3G networks between March and July.

Some major auto companies have released information on which of their car models will be affected by the shutdown — and what steps owners can take, if any, to ensure that their cars don’t lose certain connected features once the shutdown occurs.

Other carmakers, like Bentley and Stellantis, have acknowledged that some of their cars will be affected, but have declined to specify which models.

Here’s a current list of publicly known affected models:

Acura:

  • MDX models produced between 2014 and 2017
  • ILX (2016-2017)
  • RDX (2016-2017)
  • RDX (2019-2021)
  • RLX (2014-2016)
  • TLX (2015-2017)
  • NSX (2017)

Acura’s website identifies seven different vehicle models with AcuraLink features running on 3G, including real-time traffic and maintenance reminders, emergency calls and enhanced roadside assistance services, as well as some personal concierge services. The Japanese luxury brand, which is owned by Honda, says drivers should contact…

The cyberattack could have potentially shut down power to the millions of homes in the region, as per the report by News.com Australia.

Chinese Ransomware Attacks Major Energy Network

The CEO of CS Energy, Andrew Bills, said in a statement that the cyber attack against its major energy network is a worrying and “growing trend.”

The power firm attributed the massive cyber attack to hackers from China. However, it did not disclose any more details about the ransomware gang behind the incident.

Chinese Ransomware Potential Power Shut Down

The cyberattack believed to have been done by Chinese hackers could have taken out a whooping 3,500 megawatts of power from the two massive thermal coal plants in the region.

That said, the potential extent of the attack could have affected around 1.4 million to about three million homes.

Power Outage Avoided

According to the news story by 7News, the CEO of the energy firm further noted that the hacking incident did not result in any power outage due to the rapid response of its employees.

Bills said that “this incident may have affected our corporate network, but we are fortunate to have a resilient and highly skilled workforce.”

The CS Energy boss went on to praise the employees of his firm, noting that they worked the extra mile to ensure that Queenslanders will not experience any massive power outage.

The CEO added that the firm was able to “quickly contain this incident by segregating the corporate network from other internal networks,” including those from the Kogan Creek…
