A former UK intelligence worker has been jailed for stabbing a US government employee.

Joshua Bowles, from Cheltenham, attacked the woman in a leisure centre car park, three miles from GCHQ’s base, in March.

The 29-year-old was handed a life sentence at the Old Bailey, with a minimum term of 13 years.

Armed with two knives, Bowles punched and stabbed the woman repeatedly on 9 March, leaving her with cuts to her abdomen, chest and thigh.

The ex-computer software coding developer later said he had targeted her because he could not handle the “murky waters of ethics” and “the power that the American NSA have and the things they do”.

During sentencing, senior judge Mrs Justice Cheema-Grubb found the stabbing was a “politically motivated attack” driven by “anger and resentment” towards GCHQ and women.

She rejected the defence claim that it was not a terrorist incident, saying Bowles’ internet history showed he had a “deep disaffection with society and a desire to challenge authority”.

The court heard Bowles had planned the attack and searched online for topics including US Unabomber terrorist Theodore Kaczynski, attacks on women, and white supremacy.

In a victim impact statement, the woman said using her attacker’s name made her “feel sick” and brought back “awful memories”.

She said she was “devastated” to find out they had worked in the same place, adding: “This attack has had a profound effect on me and it’s utterly and completely changed my life.

“Following the attack, I went from being in the best shape I had ever been to being the weakest I have ever been.”

On the day of the stabbing, the woman – referred to by code number 99230 – was followed as she and a friend left a Cheltenham leisure centre after a game of netball.

After hearing someone say “excuse me”, she turned and was punched repeatedly in the face.

Deadly stabbing in downtown Indianapolis: IMPD makes quick arrest

INDIANAPOLIS — A man is behind bars accused of murder following a deadly stabbing in downtown Indianapolis.

Around 1 a.m. along South Illinois Street, police said a dispute between several people ended with one man stabbed to death along the sidewalk.

“This incident that occurred was between people that knew each other. This was not a random act,” said Sgt. Genae Cook with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department.

Police followed up by using cameras in the area to quickly track down the suspect, 30-year-old Nicholas Radford, to a nearby parking garage where he was arrested. He is being held without bond on a preliminary charge of murder.

“Technology is helping police officers today be able combat crime,” said Cook.

That’s why city leaders point to technology upgrades as one of several strategies for improving public safety in downtown this year.

Earlier this month, Mayor Joe Hogsett highlighted a $3.5 million partnership with Downtown Indy Inc., which will enhance public safety, cleanliness, and homeless outreach efforts in the downtown area, beginning in early 2023.

Public safety investments include increased overtime shifts for IMPD bike patrol officers and a boost to crime-fighting technology, with three new mobile security cameras to be connected to IMPD monitoring software.

In addition, small to mid-sized businesses will be able to take advantage of a grant program aimed at increasing participation in IMPD’s b-link camera system. Currently, IMPD has 128 downtown camera views, which include the b-link program and 22 license plate readers. The grant program is expected to launch in early 2023.

Also beginning in 2023, the Office of Public Health and Safety will pilot the city’s first-ever clinician-led response team downtown. The team will operate 24 hours per day, seven days per week.

The Department of Public Works (Indy DPW) will designate a new, downtown-focused crew for cleanliness and maintenance. Indy DPW will also deploy a new downtown strategy aimed at regular maintenance of alleys, sidewalk power…

No arrests reported in New York Apple Store stabbing

Two weeks after a security guard was stabbed inside Manhattan’s Meatpacking District Apple Store, there have been no reports of an arrest in the case.

In early October, a man who had been asked to wear a mask inside that downtown Manhattan Apple Store reportedly reacted by stabbing a security guard. According to The New York Daily News, the customer and guard had argued, leading to the stabbing. Video of the stabbing was later obtained and aired by New York’s ABC channel.

The guard was “wounded in the arm and head,” a police source said, although he survived the attack. A “trail of blood” was also reported inside the store, on 14th Street and 9th Avenue.
