Why to study cybersecurity and digital forensics in Nepal? Here’s an expert explanation

In an age where cybercrime cases are on the rise, the need to create professionals trained in cybersecurity and digital forensics is increasing. Over the course of the past few years, cases related to cybercrime have gone up in Nepal too, which goes to show how important it is for the country to create these professionals.

This shows the need for a course related to cybersecurity and digital forensics, which is increasing in Nepal too and as of now, it is available only at The British College (TBC). The college has brought the degree from the University of West of England (UWE) and has been running it for over a year. The degree, according to lecturers and officials at TBC, is holistic and makes the student industry-ready as it teaches students networking, programming, laws and security and forensic tools that they will learn in a state-of-the-art lab on campus.

To speak about the course, Onlinekhabar caught up with Mazhar Malik, a senior lecturer in cybersecurity and digital forensics at the Department of Computer Science and Creative Technologies at UWE-Bristol. Malik, who has been in the field since 2005, explained what students learn from the course and its importance in today’s world and for a country like Nepal.

Excerpts:

What are cybersecurity and digital forensics? And why are they essential for a country like Nepal?

If you go by definition, cybersecurity is the practice of defending computers, servers, mobile devices, electronic systems, networks, and data from malicious attacks. Digital forensics, on the other hand, is a branch of forensic science that focuses on identifying, acquiring, processing, analysing, and reporting data stored electronically.

If we look at what is happening worldwide, it is clear that cybercrimes are increasing all over the globe as one mostly hears two things. One is cybersecurity and the other is the security of data.

In the past, organisations did not pay enough attention towards investing in cyber security. But when businesses moved to work remotely through the help of the internet, then they realised the importance of cyber security.

So if you look at the banking sector, we…

Stolen data of 600,000 Indians sold on bot markets so far – study

BENGALURU, Dec 8 (Reuters) – Around five million people globally have had their data stolen and sold on the bot market till date, of which 600,000 are from India, making it the worst affected country, according to one of the world’s largest VPN serice providers NordVPN.

Bot markets are used by hackers to sell stolen data from victims’ devices with bot malware.

The study by NordVPN, of Lithuania’s Nord Security, said the stolen data included user logins, cookies, digital fingerprints, screenshots and other information, with the average price for the digital identity of a person pegged at 490 Indian rupees($5.95).

NordVPN tracked data for the past four years, ever since bot markets were launched in 2018.

India has been dealing with cyber security concerns for a while. As recently as last month, multiple servers of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), a federal government hospital that caters to ministers, politicians and the general public, were infected on Nov. 23, a senior police official told Reuters.

A week after the ransomware attack on AIIMS, the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) faced around 6,000 hacking attempts within 24 hours on Nov. 30, Times of India reported.

Indian cybersecurity rules have tightened only earlier this year, with the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT) requiring tech companies to report data breaches within six hours of noticing such incidents and to maintain IT and communications logs for six months. read more

NordVPN’s study looked into three major bot markets – the Genesis market, the Russian Market, and 2Easy – and found stolen logins including those from Google, Microsoft and Facebook accounts.

“What makes bot markets different from other dark web markets is that they are able to get large amounts of data about one person in one place,” said Marijus Briedis, chief technology officer at NordVPN.

“And after the bot is sold, they guarantee the buyer that the victim’s information will be updated as long as their device is infected by the bot.”

Researchers of NordVPN found 667 million cookies, 81,000 digital fingerprints, 538,000 auto-fill forms, numerous device screenshots, and webcam snaps in their study.
