Tinubu and Nigerian Army’s glorious era – The Sun Nigeria

It is becoming all too glaring that President Bola Tinubu is determined to turn around the fortunes of the Nigerian military for the better, in particular its most dominant force, the Nigerian Army.

In doing so, however, he must take copious notes from the different periods that can be termed as the Nigerian Army’s glorious eras.  The President should disregard the naysayers and pay full regard to physical achievements that have helped in shaping the army to the strong institution it has become today.

According to defence.gov.ng, “the history of the Nigerian Army dates to 1863, when Lt. Glover of the Royal Navy selected 18 indigenes from the northern part of the country and organized them into a local force, known as the ‘Glover Hausas’. The small force was used by Glover as governor of Lagos to mount punitive expedition in the Lagos hinterland and to protect British trade routes around Lagos. In 1865, the ‘Glover Hausa’ became a regular force with the name ‘Hausa Constabulary’. It performed both police and military duties for the Lagos colonial government. It later became ‘Lagos Constabulary’.

“On incorporation into the West Africa Frontier Force (WAFF) in 1901, it became ‘Lagos Battalion’. In addition to this force, the British government included the Royal Niger Company (RNC) Constabulary Force in Northern Nigeria.”

But narrowing this down to our contemporary history as a nation, no matter what anyone might say, the reality is that the era when General Tukur Yusufu Buratai held sway as Army Chief is the most glorious, given the unprecedented challenges of the time and the achievements made.

A well-researched piece published by ireporteronline.com, entitled “Promoting Professionalism: Major Reorganization and Modernization Under General Buratai’s Tenure,” captures that era as follows:

Preceding his appointment as the Chief of Army Staff by former President Muhammadu Buhari in 2015, the military was losing its officers and men in large numbers. Thus, Buratai’s drive was to improve on the military’s operational achievementsWithin three months of his appointment, Buratai verified his leadership capability by…

experts call for increased investment in internet security – The Sun Nigeria

….As CBN, EFCC, CDS, others brainstorm

In order to combat the current incidence of internet fraud in Nigeria, information technology (IT) professionals on the platform of the Nigeria Computer Society (NCS) have said that the country has to invest significantly in cyber security, develop local skills, and take IT more seriously.

NCS President, Prof Adesina Sodiya stated this at the opening of the Annual Cyber Security Forum and Workshop organised by the organisation, Wednesday in Abuja.

Sodiya said the workshop, which was attended by representatives of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), the the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Chief of Defence Staff, among other top government institutions and functionaries, was to provide a platform for experts to come together and discuss how the nation’s cyber security challenges could be solved.

According to him, “A lot is going on in the financial and other sectors. You just heard from the EFCC guy where he confirmed that they are facing a lot of challenges in the area of cyber security. The issue is that so many of our young men, mostly due to unemployment are taking into cyber crimes. If you know what our youths can do, you would be amazed.”

Speaking further, he recommended that, “The first thing we need to do to address the issue of cyber insecurity is to invest more in cyber security protection. Critical information infrastructure protection. Some people in government, still do not know the level of threat that we have and even when some IT professionals are mentioning these threats, they feel that they want to use the opportunity to get money and so on and so forth but, the truth remains that we need to invest more on cyber security.

“We also need to truly make cyber security a business. Some of these guys that are experts, we should find a way of harnessing their skills for something that is go for the nation.

“Then again, government should take the issue of IT very seriously. The issue of IT is not something they should play with. Look at what happened to INEC, we told them that they needed to prepare well for cyber security. We sent proposals to them. Eventually, one of the…

Sun Pharma Revenues Take a Shot due to Major Ransomware Attack

Sun Pharma, one of India’s leading pharmaceutical companies, has recently admitted that its operations and revenues have been impacted by a cyberattack on its IT assets that occurred on 2nd March.

Initially, the company stated that the incident did not impact its core systems and operations. However, a recent filing to the stock exchange reveals that the attack did have an impact on the company’s business operations and revenue.

The company has taken containment measures and isolated its network while initiating the recovery process but admits that some of its businesses will experience reduced revenues as a result of the attack.

This incident involved a breach of certain systems and theft of company and personal data. A ransomware group has claimed responsibility for the attack. The company has not been able to determine the full extent of the impact, including the possibility of additional security incidents, increased insurance costs, diversion of management and employee time, or the potential for litigation.

Sun Pharma’s recent cyberattack is the latest in a series of IT security breaches faced by pharmaceutical companies. Last year, Novartis was reportedly targeted by the hacking group Industrial Spy, which runs a marketplace of stolen data. Fortunately, Novartis managed to avoid any sensitive data being compromised.

AstraZeneca faced a similar security incident in November 2022 when some of its records were left exposed online due to a user error. Credentials for an internal server were mistakenly left on a code-sharing site, leading to the exposure of sensitive patient data for over a year.

These incidents serve as a stark reminder that no company or industry is immune to cyber threats. With the healthcare industry being the most targeted sector in India, pharmaceutical companies must remain vigilant and proactive in their efforts to protect their IT assets and data.

Sun Pharma ended Monday 1.15% up at Rs983.95 on the BSE, while the 30-share Sensex closed marginally higher at 57,653.86 points.
