Swiss Airspace Closed After Computer Glitch, Flights Grounded

Swiss Airspace Closed After Computer Glitch, Flights Grounded

Flights have been grounded in several airports.

Geneva:

Swiss airspace was closed on Wednesday after a computer glitch with the air traffic control system grounded flights at the country’s main airports, officials said.

“Swiss airspace is closed to traffic for security reasons after computer failure with Skyguide, the Swiss air traffic control service,” Skyguide said in a statement.

It did not give any details about the computer crash, but said it “regrets this incident and its consequences for the clients, partners and passengers of Geneva and Zurich airports and is working flat out to find a solution.”

Earlier, Geneva’s airport said in a tweet that it was grounding all of its flights until 11 am (0900 GMT) because of the computer failure.

The Swiss news agency ATS-Keystone said international flights to Switzerland were being re-routed to Milan.

Hacker Shows How Gas Pumps Are Security Swiss Cheese And Easy Targets For Thieves

gas station thieves steal gas through hacking

As gas prices continue to rise, some shadowy figures are looking for “alternative” method to acquire fuel, whether legal or not. One such method, specifically hacking a gas pump, has led to the recent theft of 400 gallons of fuel at a High Point gas station in North Carolina. However, this is not the only incidence of this happening, and as it turns out, gas pumps are surprisingly vulnerable to being hacked.

Earlier this week, a video surfaced of a man stealing gas for himself and other vehicles that arrived after the gas station had closed. Police and news outlets claim that the person pointed a device at the gas pump to release the dispenser to help fill up several cars waiting for free gas, leading to the theft of approximately $1600 in fuel. It is speculated that the thieves used a “special remote to alter the mechanics of the gas pump that puts it in ‘dispense mode,’ dispensing hundreds of gallons of gas for free,” according to Petroleum Technician Trey Barker, who spoke with Fox 8 in North Carolina. He continued, stating, “The reason dispensers have this option is so petroleum technicians, and NC Weight and Measures can test and calibrate dispensers.”

What appears to be a regular fill up simply isn’t as multiple cars come through for free gas

Interestingly, this theft is not the only one in recent years and is not the only option thieves have. In 2018, Kaspersky Labs found a basic web interface on a Linux-based controller unit in an embedded box at a gas station somewhere in the US. Following this discovery, it was found that this site is “responsible for managing every component of the station, including dispensers, payment terminals and more,” at the heart of the gas station. However, this was not the only gas station at risk, as there were at least 1,000 others with similar infrastructure exposed to the internet.

It is likely that other gas pump brands may use a similar configurations that could be exposed as well, and we might not know about them yet. In any event, default credentials for these web interfaces are sometimes not changed, allowing easy access into these systems. Besides this, there might also be…

Swiss plan cyber defence command centre

The government is beefing up its defences against cyberattacks, focusing on a command centre comprising 575 members of the armed forces who will be trained over the coming years.

“Not a day goes by without a cyberattack,” Defence Minister Viola Amherd told the media in Bern on Wednesday. IT systems must therefore be better protected – also by the armed forces, she said.

However, army chief Thomas Süssli put things into perspective, saying “it’s not possible to put a soldier behind every user”. The issue now goes to parliament.

Until now the focus of cyber defence has been on the protection of military communication channels and facilities. The new rapid reaction force should be able to provide subsidiary support to operators of critical infrastructures and private companies in the defence against attacks. Infrastructures considered critical by the government include electricity companies, the Federal Railways and telecom companies.

The defence ministry said the plan was to have the specialist staff in position from January 1, 2022, with the number of soldiers increasing from 206 today to 575. However, Süssli said it would “still take some time” until the troops are fully ready.

Mission-oriented

The second piece of the cyber defence puzzle is a new special command. Today’s broadly diversified Command Support Base is to be transformed into a mission-oriented, military cyber command by the beginning of 2024.

In future, this command will provide key military capabilities in the areas of situational awareness, cyber defence, IT, communication, command support, code breaking and electronic warfare.

In May 2019 Switzerland became a member of the NATO’s Cooperative Cyber Defence Centre of Excellence (CCDCOE) in Tallinn, Estonia. This has given Swiss authorities access to the centre’s knowledge and information as well as research and training activities.
