What is the ultimate life hack? | Entertainment/Life

A “life hack” is any process or technique that reduces chaos in one’s life and makes things easier to manage or more convenient. An internet search of life hacks brings up a dizzying number of videos demonstrating a few helpful things and others that I never knew I needed to know.

For example, there’s a video on how to use a curling iron to get wrinkles out of a piece of paper — or another on how to use a single piece of penne pasta to get the last of the lipstick out of a tube and then use said pasta to apply lipstick.

That said, there are some helpful hacks, full of common sense, like:

  • Tie a brightly colored piece of cloth on your luggage to help you spot it at the airport.
  • For the short term, tape a dryer sheet over an air conditioner vent to help a room smell fresher.
  • Iron a button-up shirt inside out to make ironing easier.
  • Put pancake batter in a squeezable old ketchup bottle to make more creative pancakes.
  • Use a straw to remove the center and stem of a strawberry.

You get the point.

Each of those items and plenty more are, indeed, helpful and can improve a circumstance. Certainly, plenty of folks spend incredible amounts of time making videos demonstrating these or similar life hacks.

However, in the difficult times we are experiencing, I’ve started to wonder about other life hacks that might make use of the internet — ones that might make a bigger difference in the world than me spotting my luggage a second faster.

Therefore, I propose folks work toward creating a different strand of life hacks — ones focused on chesed.

What is chesed, you ask? It’s a Hebrew word so rich and loaded with meaning that there is no direct English translation. It means more than benevolence — it’s about living in kindness toward others, practicing compassion and generosity toward those we know well and those we don’t know at all.

Think about that for a moment.

What if there were life hacks for:

  • How to treat those who work in a service industry with dignity, compassion and kindness?
  • How meaningful…

Hackers exploit zero-day in WordPress plugin Ultimate Member

Hackers have once again found a way to break into WordPress accounts. This time, a zero-day in the Ultimate Member plugin grants access.

Hackers can penetrate 200,000 WordPress websites through a zero-day in the Ultimate Member plugin. The plugin serves website visitors with a simple account registration.

No secure version

All versions of the plugin contain the zero-day. However the developers have been trying to eliminate the vulnerability since version 2.6.3, but they failed. “Versions 2.6.4, 2.6.5, 2.6.6 partially close this vulnerability, but we are still working with the WPScan team to get the best result,” writes a developer from the company.

In the meantime, the high vulnerability score of 9.8 indicates that the security incident deserves attention. Through the zero-day, hackers can make themselves administrators of the vulnerable website, writes Chloe Chamberland, a cybersecurity researcher at Wordfence. Her team discovered the zero-day first.

V2.6.6 at risk

Ultimate Member recommends users of the plugin keep up with updates: “All previous versions are vulnerable so we highly recommend to upgrade your websites to 2.6.6 and keep updates in the future for getting the recent security and feature enhancements.”

According to Chamberland, however, that leaves too much risk. “Since the latest version of the plugin, 2.6.6, has not been fully patched, we recommend removing the plugin until a full patch is released.”

WordPress in 2023

This is already the ninth vulnerability in WordPress we have reported on this year. In two cases, it was an old vulnerability for which users had not yet bothered to install the patch. Still, the number of security risks for 2023 in the CMS (Content Management System) is already climbing toward ten. So the software appears to be an interesting target for hackers, but not all vulnerabilities pose equally big problems.

Big problems form with bugs that affect many WordPress websites. Among these, we can already count for 2023 the vulnerability in the WordPress plugin Elementor. More than 1 million websites were vulnerable to the flaw. The news followed an earlier vulnerability in the Pro version of…

How does red teaming test the ultimate limits of cyber security?

Hacking can be a dirty word. It evokes images of a person sitting in the dark with a black hoodie on, hunched over a keyboard, in front of multiple screens, attacking an innocent business, or individuals, online. It automatically generates thoughts of terrible ransomware attacks and cyber criminal gangs with names such as Evil Corp.

But cyber criminals have a foe – ethical hackers. We hack companies to show them their weaknesses so they can fix them before they are breached.

Companies are aware that cyber attacks are increasing by 50% year on year. With organisational spending on cyber security at an all-time high, firms are spending significant amounts on their security infrastructure. I’m often asked: How can we know that our cyber security is working effectively?

My advice to companies is simple – invest in a red teaming test.

Red teaming is the practice of simulating a multi-layered cyber attack that tests the effectiveness of every aspect of an organisation’s security. Rather than running the risk of financial and reputational damage after being hit by a ransomware attack, hire ethical hackers to simulate an attack to unearth vulnerabilities, so that they can be addressed before it’s too late.

“The only real way you can determine the effectiveness of your security is by getting hacked. Red teaming tests employ both virtual and physical methods to probe for weakness, exactly as a cyber criminal would”
Rob Shapland, Falanx Cyber

Cyber attacks – like when Revolut was breached in September 2022, revealing 50,000 customers’ sensitive data – may have been prevented with a red teaming test that would have pinpointed the threat social engineering posed to the team.

For a company to be put through its paces, it needs to be tested through active and proactive attacks of both its virtual and physical systems, using the same tactics, techniques and procedures as cyber criminal groups are using right now. My team typically carries out a red teaming mission in five steps:

  1. We always begin with open source intelligence gathering (OSINT). As with the first stage of any operation, we begin an attack by investigating a company and its employees,…
