Breaking Down the Code: Computer Scientists Untangle Internet’s Complex Protocols to Unveil Underlying Simplicity


Undergraduate students taking computer-networking courses often find themselves confronted with an avalanche of acronymic protocols that dictate how the internet works. But underlying the layers of complexity, there exists surprising simplicity in the design of the internet, as illustrated in the February cover feature for Communications of the ACM (Association for Computing Machinery) — a monthly magazine published by the world’s largest educational and scientific computing society.

Looking to cut through that seemingly tangled mess, UCLA computer science professor George Varghese, joined by his colleagues James McCauley of Mount Holyoke College in Massachusetts and Scott Shenker of UC Berkeley, set out to explain in this article that the internet’s fundamental design has remained unchanged since its adoption in 1983.

Titled “Extracting the Essential Simplicity of the Internet,” the predominantly non-technical article boils down the internet’s architecture to three key mechanisms: routing, reliability and resolution. They formed the foundation of the ubiquitous global system of interconnected computer networks despite evolving technologies built around the internet.

“Most people understand the power of the internet but few appreciate the brilliance of its design that has allowed the system to accommodate decades of growth, with billions of users and connected devices that process mountains of data in a blink of an eye,” said Varghese, who holds UCLA’s Jonathan B. Postel Endowed Chair in Networking. He has made landmark contributions to network algorithmics, which helped make the internet run faster. His current research emphasis is on network design automation, to help manage and debug computer networks.

The article originated from a guest lecture by Shenker on the internet’s basic routing simplicity in a UCLA undergraduate networking class taught by Varghese. It was a moment packed with symbolism.

China’s frail former leader, Hu Jintao, who presided over one of China’s more open and prosperous periods, was shepherded out of the closing session of an important political meeting on Saturday, a rare disruption in a highly choreographed proceeding.

Mr. Hu, 79, was sitting in the front row next to his successor, Xi Jinping, when two attendants approached his table. One tried to lift him out of his chair, an effort Mr. Hu resisted. But then he stood up by himself, as the attendants continued standing behind him, while some of the senior officials nearby looked on in apparent concern.

After a brief exchange with the attendants, Mr. Hu, who appeared hesitant and possibly confused, said a few words to Mr. Xi, who gave the elder leader an expressionless nod, and Li Keqiang, who as China’s premier is the nation’s second-ranking official. Then Mr. Hu was led out of the hall.

Observers cycled through possible explanations: A positive Covid-19 test? Something else health-related? Or a scripted political gesture for international cameras to capture and frame?

The truth, like much else with Chinese politics, will probably never be revealed. But the timing, moments after reporters were allowed to enter the hall, was at least suggestive.

“Given how carefully these meetings are rehearsed and arranged, the fact that they let this happen in front of everyone, in front of the media, is the most important thing,” said Henry Gao, a law professor at Singapore Management University.

Last Sunday, in his keynote speech at the opening of the Party Congress, Mr. Xi went down a list of dissatisfactions, those accumulated during the decade before his rule. They included weakness in the Party, in the economy, and in national security, as well as the Party’s posture toward Hong Kong and Taiwan.

“With Xi, he doesn’t do these things for nothing,” Mr. Gao said. “Hu was the one in power 10 years ago.”

AWS and the NHL Unveil New Face-off Probability Stat to Bring Hockey Fans Closer to the Action on the Ice

(AWS), an Amazon.com, Inc. company (NASDAQ: AMZN), and the National Hockey League (NHL) today announced Face-off Probability, a live, in-game NHL stat that will be displayed as a graphic that instantly shows the odds of a player winning a face-off and possession of the puck and displays them on screen for fans watching the broadcast of the game. Before the puck is dropped in a face-off, the Face-off Probability machine learning (ML) model identifies where on the ice a face-off is going to occur, and who will take the face-off, and determines the probability of each player winning the draw.

When play stops, the Face-off Probability model begins generating win probabilities for players who it predicts will take the upcoming face-off. The probabilities are based on metrics including the players on the ice, face-off location, and current game situation. Face-off Probability is one of the first ML driven stats developed for NHL Edge IQ, powered by AWS. The face-off is one of the most anticipated and contested moments in hockey. Late in the third period of a close game, when two players are face to face on the ice, waiting for the puck to drop deep in the zone, the tension is palpable. Whichever player wins possession can swing the momentum to his team and directly impact the game’s outcome. With Face-off Probability, fans and broadcasters now have data to back up their predictions and determine which player is most likely to win.
