Israeli Spy Drama ‘Trust No One’ Ups the Paranoia – Variety

World-premiering at the Monte-Carlo Television Festival, Israeli espionage thriller “Trust No One” marries the pedigree and primetime polish of past series like “Traitor” and “Valley of Tears” with techno-anxieties tied to the here-and-now – specifically with regards to the security state and modern cyber warfare.

“Israel has become one of the largest global exporters of spy ware,” says co-creator Daniel Amsel. “Only, those technological weapons can undermine democracy and lead to the death of truth. So we wanted to thread those very sensitive topics into an entertaining and fast-paced thriller that deals with the loneliness of leadership and the difficulties of parenthood, among other themes.”

Created by Amsel alongside Ron Leshem (“Euphoria”) and Amit Cohen (“False Flag”), directed by Ofir Lobel (“A Wonderful Country,” “Black Space”), and distributed by Keshet International, the nine-part drama follows Itamar (“Fire Dance” award-winner Yehuda Levi), the youngest ever head of Israel’s Shin Bet security agency turned target of a cyber-security leak.

As promised by the title, the series ratchets up the paranoia scene-for-scene once Itamar finds himself alienated from (and suspicious of) the full security apparatus serving under him.

“Nobody’s spared in this age of AI, deep-fakes and all-powerful surveillance,” says Amsel. “Even if you’re surrounded by the most sophisticated defense system, nobody is safe. Not even the head of the biggest security agency in the Middle East.”

“We thought to explore how the most secretive people in the world react to a time when sharing has become our second nature and privacy no longer exists,” Amsel continues. “We have all willingly given up privacy in the name of comfort, and today every possible bit of date is but a few clicks away. That offers a fresh way into an intelligence agency drama, especially when you dive into the character’s point of view.”

Russia’s MTS mobile operator posts profit rise, ups guidance, Telecom News, ET Telecom

Russia's MTS mobile operator posts profit rise, ups guidanceMOSCOW: Russia’s biggest mobile operator MTS on Thursday reported a 46.5% net profit jump to 17.2 billion roubles ($232.06 million) in the second quarter and raised its full-year revenue guidance to high single-digit growth.

MTS is one of several Russian companies developing services beyond its core business. President and CEO Vyacheslav Nikolaev said non-core segments – fintech, retail, media, cloud and digital – contributed more than half of revenue growth year-on-year.

“MTS Bank in particular has now achieved sufficient scale to become an engine of profitability for the group as a whole,” Nikolaev said in a statement.

The bank added around 100,000 customers in the quarter and posted net profit of 3.4 billion roubles for the first half of 2021, versus a 0.9 billion rouble loss in the same period last year, MTS said.

Second-quarter revenue was up 10.6% to 128.6 billion roubles. The company said it expects adjusted operating income before depreciation and amortisation (OIBDA) to rise by at least 5% this year, up from a previous forecast of 4% growth.

Adjusted OIBDA was 10.2% higher at 57.2 billion roubles in the second quarter.

MTS confirmed its 2021 capex guidance of between 100-110 billion roubles. It said Russian legal requirements that telecom operators store certain data for up to six months meant it would need to spend around 50 billion roubles on data storage systems between H2 2018 and H1 2023.

Clubhouse ups security protection following hack worries

Audio-chat social network app Clubhouse is experiencing further security woes after it was revealed that an attacker was stealing live audio data from the platform. The revelation raises serious privacy concerns for users of the invitation-only app, which has seen its valuation skyrocket in recent months.

Researchers at the Stanford Internet Observatory (SIO) had recently identified a number of security issues affecting the platform, including the transmission of personally identifiable information such as a user’s unique Clubhouse ID number and chatroom ID in plaintext. In response, Clubhouse insisted that it was introducing safeguards to ensure user data couldn’t be stolen by malicious actors – a promise which may not be worth as much as initially thought.
