Hong Kong private hospital given 4 weeks to submit report over US$10 million ransomware attack

Hong Kong health authorities have told a private hospital it has four weeks to submit a detailed report after it was hit by a malicious cyberattack and refused to pay a US$10 million ransom.

The Department of Health said on Saturday that it was investigating the incident at Union Hospital in Tai Wai, with its initial findings showing the ransomware attack had not compromised any patient data or medical services.

“Our initial understanding is that it did not involve [the release of] patients’ data nor did it affect the service security of the hospital,” it said. “The Department of Health has requested the hospital to hand in a detailed report in four weeks.”

Health authorities said they had also notified law enforcement agencies, including police and the city’s privacy commissioner.

Union Hospital revealed on Thursday that it had fallen prey to the ransomware attack on Monday morning, resulting in some “operational disruptions”.

“In response to the attack, the hospital has activated the emergency response system and stepped up cyber security measures to block further intrusion … Union Hospital condemns any form of cyberattack,” the hospital said.

“A team of cybersecurity experts has been appointed to conduct thorough system inspection and recovery in order to ensure medical service continuity.”

The hospital stressed that its staff had been vigilant over cybersecurity threats and ensured that all patient records were encrypted and password-protected.

“The leakage of patient data is unfounded as of now. An investigation into the attack is in progress,” it said.

The institution said it had reported the case to the department, the privacy commissioner and police, adding that patients with concerns could contact them at [email protected].

Hackers reportedly used ransomware called “LockBit” to target the hospital and demand the US$10 million ransom, which the latter refused to pay.

Police said they received a report from a hospital employee on Monday over abnormalities in the hospital’s network system including some computer files going missing, but no personal data was involved.

Court delays mount 2 weeks into ransomware attack on Colorado public defender’s office – Greeley Tribune

The Office of the Colorado State Public Defender remains crippled by a ransomware attack two weeks after the malware first forced the statewide agency to disable its computer systems — and the shutdown is raising growing concern across the state court system as delays mount.

Most public defenders have regained access to their computers, court filings and “some client files” since the ransomware was discovered Feb. 9, but “more work is necessary to return to normal operations,” the agency said in a statement Friday.

Officials with the public defender’s office refused to say how much money was demanded in the ransomware attack, in which criminals blocked access to some of the agency’s files and demanded payment to restore that access.

They also have not said whether the office will pay the ransom, when the agency expects to once again be fully operational, what kind of information was breached, and whether the personal information of attorneys, witnesses or victims of crime was exposed.

Public defenders this week still could not effectively represent their clients in court in most cases, said 18th Judicial District Attorney John Kellner, who serves as the elected prosecutor in Arapahoe, Douglas, Elbert and Lincoln counties.

“It’s reminiscent of the COVID slowdowns a couple years ago,” he said. “We have public defenders asking for continuances or resetting trials on most matters.”

In the week after the attack, the statewide number of rescheduled hearings jumped by nearly 600 compared to the previous week, according to data provided by the Colorado Judicial Department. Hearings were rescheduled in about 3,300 cases across the state in the week before the attack, which increased to about 3,900 cases during the first full week that the public defender’s office was dealing with the ransomware — an 18% jump.

The longer the public defender’s office is non-operational, the more of a problem the repeated rescheduling becomes, said 16th Judicial District Chief Judge Mark MacDonnell.

“I don’t think we’ll be able to continue on this path for a long time,” he said. “It’s been two weeks and it’s getting to the point where if it’s not solved,…

Ubisoft Thwarts Hacking Attempt Weeks After Insomniac Data Breach

Ubisoft has apparently thwarted an attempted hack during which an individual gained access to the company’s systems for 48 hours. The company has said that it’s currently investigating the security breach, and a full statement will likely come after the holiday.

Ubisoft hack could have resulted in a theft of 900 GB of data

First reported by Bleeping Computer, Twitter user vx-underground posted screenshots that purportedly show an individual attempting to steal 900 GB of data from Ubisoft’s systems on December 20 — not long after a devastating ransomware attack on Insomniac Games. It’s unclear if the individual is affiliated with a group or was acting solo.

The hacker had access to Ubisoft’s systems for roughly 48 hours when the breach was detected and they were thrown out, seemingly unsuccessful in their attempt to lift the data.

Bleeping Computer reached out to Ubisoft who acknowledged reports of the infiltration. “We are aware of an alleged data security incident and are currently investigating,” the statement reads. “We don’t have more to share at this time.”

While Ubisoft managed to fight off the hacker, Insomniac Games wasn’t so lucky. The studio is still reeling from the impact of the ransomware attack, and is assessing the damage.
