Czech Republic courts young African leaders with maiden ‘Cool Czechia’ study trip

Between 1948 and 1989, Czechoslovakia – as it was then known – was under communist rule. For decades, there was an absence of opposition while restrictions were in place to prevent Czechs and Slovaks from travelling to non-communist countries.

But in November 1989, a hunger for change and an end to the status quo spread across the country like wildfire. Although sparked by peaceful demonstrations organised by students, renowned dissidents such as the iconic Vaclav Havel would eventually inspire the movement to grow into a clamour for political restructuring and an end to communist leadership.

By November 28 of that year, the agitation yielded fruit as the federal assembly removed the provision in the constitution which regarded the Communist Party as the controlling authority in the country. The movement would later be coined the Velvet Revolution, acclaimed as a remarkable non-violent transition of power.

Given its experience with oppression and subjugation, it is perhaps no surprise that Czechia opened its doors to the Ukrainians following the Russian invasion of the country in February 2022. Since the outbreak of the war, the country has admitted more than half a million refugees from Ukraine, with over 100,000 fully employed across different parts of Czech.

The 18-month-old war and its ripple effects have seen many Western nations realigning and restrategising their partnerships across the world.

The African allure

As Africa improves its economic and geopolitical outlook, many foreign nations are looking to boost their alliances and gain the continent’s support in multilateral fora. The Czech Republic is not left out.

Through a multi-faceted strategy, Czech is looking to expand its partnership with Africa while creating a long-lasting positive impact on the continent.

And what better demographic to forge a relationship with than young Africans on track to become important voices in their respective countries?

Enters ‘Cool Czechia: Young African Leaders Study Trip’ – an initiative conceptualised by the ministry of foreign affairs of the Czech Republic.

From July 26 to August 3, several young African leaders were invited to history-rich Prague –…

The black hat hacker trap: Why unethical hacking lures young people

Check out all the on-demand sessions from the Intelligent Security Summit here.

Hackers are often thought of as individuals who sow chaos for the organizations they target. However, some hackers put their abilities to good use to become ethical hackers, making up for the damage caused. Despite there being huge growth in ethical hacking and prosperous career opportunities in this area, black hat hacking continues to attract young people due to their fascination with risky online behavior and tech savviness.

In 2017 the UK National Crime Agency commissioned a report that found the average age of a hacker was 17. Today, this is still true — consider recent incidents, such as when a 17-year-old led the charge on the Uber and Rockstar attacks.

What separates black hat hackers from white hat hackers is intent. Black hat hackers use their technical capabilities to maliciously compromise businesses’ data, while white hat hackers support organizations in finding weak points in their systems. But, at the end of the day, both use the same methods.

Even though there is a thin line between what ethical and unethical hackers do, young people can easily become more interested in attacking organizations due to peer pressure, or to seek social acceptance. This leaves many considering the attraction of unethical hacking and what organizations and communities can do to put young people’s talents to good use.

A slippery slope into a life of cybercrime

The love for coding and hacking often has humble beginnings. Starting out, young people may innocently taunt friends and siblings by hacking into their personal computers. Once hooked, young people begin to unearth more and more forums that outline organizations’ weak points and access tools, making hacking…

SJ ‘Uptown Apartments’ Get Upscale Treatment Aimed at Young Professional Tenants

A Florida entrepreneur says he’s fallen in love with St. Joseph and Michigan’s Great Southwest!   As a result, Leonard Schulz is totally renovating an apartment complex in ‘Uptown St. Joe’, near the key intersection of Niles Avenue and Main Street.

Schulz tells us the ‘Uptown Apartments’, which have been quietly serving tenants at 1117 Niles Avenue since the 1970s, will soon take on an ‘upscale’ feel, catering to young professionals who have followed employment to St. Joseph or Benton Harbor, but are frustrated when they look for a nice apartment to call “home.”

There are eight one-bedroom apartments in the Uptown building.  Schulz describes them as “roomy, very adequate size-wise.”  However, he says, they of course need updating to appeal the the Millennials and Gen-Z tenants he’s targeting.  All the apartments will be essentially the same and rent in the $1200 per month range when they go on the market late Winter or early Spring.

Schulz says infrastructure is being updated throughout the complex, including internet, security cameras and locked storage areas for each unit.  Landscaping and outdoor lighting will follow in the Spring.  He promises there will be a “new fresh feel” to the entire project.  Schulz says there is off-street parking for each unit.

When asked about how he came to acquire the Uptown Apartments, the Palm Beach Gardens, Florida resident smiles, chuckles and shares a story.

“I was looking for a house and ended up buying the apartments.  They were listed one day and I bought them by noon the next day.  I was the first one in a line that formed quickly.”

Schulz said the property seemed to jump out at him from the online listings.  So he quickly called his realtor, who went to the location and gave Schulz a quick “Facetime” walk-through.  He decided to make an offer and by the end of the day, the deal was done.

Schulz also bought a house on Highland Avenue along the St. Joseph River, where he expects to spend the warmer weather months, while maintaining his Florida residence in the Winter.  He says he never imagined himself as a “Michigander”, but developed a…

Speaking at the event, Economic Empowerment Adviser at the MTN Ghana Foundation, Mrs. Cynthia Mills underscored the need for young girls to be educated on safety when using online tools.

She said it is important to train young girls about the dangers on the internet so that they can stay protected.

Madam Toffa charged the girls not to give out sensitive information or passwords to people they meet online.

“Don’t give out information, numbers, and personal details to people that you don’t know. It will be very helpful for your development” she added.

For her part, Superintendent Sophia Eva Anim from the Formed Police Unit [FPU]) charged beneficiaries of the initiative to always look out for red flags when interacting with people on social media.

She said anytime young girls feel threatened, scared, or feel someone has bad intentions about them, they should immediately walk away.
