avast! 4.8 Home Edition is more lightweight, comes with more features, and has Boot-Time scan option. Resident shield protection blows AVG into the dust. Get avast!, it found nine trojans AVG missed on my computer.
Spyware Terminator + SpywareBlaster is a good combo.
COMODO Pro Firewall is the best free firewall ever.

If you know how to download torrents or you have access to eMule, search for the ESET NOD32 Antivirus, it is one of the best Antivirus software in the market and it usually comes with a Fix to have the 31days freetrial ’til 2050 (Which means endless protection for free)
I have used it since a couple of years ago, and it works just fine.

These are the programs I use on my computer and I have never had a problem that these programs have not caught in almost real-time:
ANTI-VIRUS
Avast home edition is what I use. It scans the system actively (it scans things downloaded to your computer and will almost instantly detect malware) Get it at http://www.avast.com/
ANTI-SPYWARE
As for spyware and other small problems most anti-virus programs miss I use spybot search & destroy (http://www.safer-networking.org/en/downl… which catches tracking cookies, registry changes, and malicious software often missed by avast and norton.
SITE ADVISOR
To keep me out of sites that contain malicious software I use McAfee Site Advisor (http://www.siteadvisor.com/) which will warn you if you travel to a questionable page.
FIRE WALL
For a firewall I use Comodo Firewall (http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/)… These work together to cover almost all the holes that could be exploited in your computer.
DISK CLEANUP
This is not a anti-virus program, but I do find it handy. To free up space on my hard drive, and keep it running smoothly, I use CCleaner (http://www.ccleaner.com/) which deletes all the files that have been abandoned or are not necessary for you computer to function. Many programs save a lot of extra files that they will never use to your hard drive. This program also cleanse your registry of all broken paths and DLLs that have accumulated over time.
