What would be considered the best, reliable computer security program?

I’m looking for the best security program to defend against viruses, trojans, spyware, etc., for my laptop.

There are several good ones, not really any best one. Most users will tell you the one they use it the best, when in fact all they are telling you is how little they know about other security programs. If you want a paid program Norton Internet Security is a good first choice. Runs light, high detection rate, and very good identity protection. Kaspersky Internet Security is also good with a very nice sandboxing feature. Bitdefender is also good. All of these programs offer a free 30 day trial. Make sure you try before you buy. Here’s a link to a 90 day free trial of Norton Internet Security 2011

the strongest security is common sense
you’ll build your common sense by getting viruses and reinstalling the operating system over and over after you do it enough you’ll know what to click on and what not to click on or you’ll pay the consequence of wasting another day away reinstalling the operating system
a good free backup defense could be in the form of a free antivirus software
there’s many to choose from and if you are on windows microsoft security essentials is offered free from the microsoft website and a common free antivirus software is AVG from http://free.avg.com/
for trojans spyware and other malware i’d suggest malwarebytes antimalware
you can search for it on http://www.download.com/ there’s also spybot search & destroy and a lot of others but those are the two that i’ve tried

The best security is the user who does their homework and learns what not to do while being online…
There is no perfect security software setup. Use an anti virus that you feel comfortable using, windows firewall, a good web browser like Chrome with an adblocker and WOT-extention, good 2nd opinion malware-scanners like Malwarebytes and Hitman Pro, and keep windows and all software updated. Probably the best advice is to learn and create a whole disk image backup, so if something goes wrong you just put a fresh image on and you are good to go again in a few minutes. There is also Sandboxie which is very cool and easier to learn and use than most people think…

The first time my laptop was infected by virus about three years back,I had Spy bot. Yesterday my laptop was hijacked by “Think Point”( it actually locked me out, demanded payment and I can’t even switched off.) I had Avast. To me, I’m beginning to believe that there is no full proof so called Security Program out there against viruses. I will just have to be careful next time I click onto websites.

Just personal opinion of course. I use Avast , I have also got superantispyware and Malwarebytes. I recently changed to Comodo firewall which seems fine and I seem to boot up quicker. They are all free for personal use and I have had no trouble with Viruses Trojans Hackers etc. I also use Windows Defender from the Microsoft site. It is safe to use two anti-spy products but never use more than one A/V as it can cause conflicts. You should run A/V and anti spy weekly.
