Why do people still camp out for iPhones?

I am not a camper … ask anyone who knows me.

However, in October 1975 I camped out for a night outside Fenway Park to score World Series tickets. Though the Red Sox lost that series, I still treasure the memories.

About a decade later, I camped out for two nights in front of a bank to claim one of a limited number of low-cost, government-backed mortgage loans so I could buy a condo. That suburban camping trip saved me many thousands of dollars over the next 20 years.

Never have I camped out to buy a telephone – even a magical one — nor could I imagine doing so in the future.

Yet people all over the world still do it.

For a lifetime of memories? Sure, I’ll sleep on a sidewalk. Save tens of thousands of dollars? I’m there.
