Cleveland Power Rankings: Cooling centers vs. Ransomware
The Power Rankings from Signal Cleveland is a weekly roundup of the people, places and things wielding their power, for better or worse, in Greater Cleveland. Beating the heat, cooling centers top the list this week.
Last week, Juneteenth topped the list, with City Hall’s IT staff and Mayor Justin Bibb following close behind.

1. Cooling centers
No sweat: The city extended the hours of six rec centers to offer people free places to escape the heat last week. The forecast calls for slightly cooler temps this week. Maybe it’s time for a splash?
2. Ransomware
Getting back to good: City Hall is open again, but fallout from the recent cyberattack means that some services are slow and others are still unavailable.
3. The Rolling Stones
Start Me Up: The undead rockers thrilled a nearly filled Browns Stadium. And according to our own Cleveland Documenter Gennifer Harding-Gosnell, Mick Jagger even got on his knees for all of Cleveland and didn’t need any help to stand back up.
4. The Daily Planet
Look! Up in the sky: The Leader Building, built in 1913 as the home of the real newspaper Cleveland Leader, has been transformed into the home of The Daily Planet, the newspaper that employs Clark Kent, for ongoing production of the next Superman movie. They could have used the Signal Cleveland office – just sayin.
5. Lucy
Good bones: Cleveland Museum of Natural History kicked off a celebration of 50 years of hosting Lucy, the 3.2-million-year-old Australopithecus afarensis skeleton.
6. Marcie Goodman and John Ewing
That’s a wrap: The longtime leaders of the Cleveland International Film Festival and Cleveland Cinematheque, respectively, are retiring.
7. Cleveland Music Awards
Polls are open.
8.The Buckeye Flame
