On Wednesday, an Etihad Airways Boeing 787 in Abu Dhabi embarked on a roughly seven-hour flight to Amsterdam with its tank full of a mixture of jet fuel and biofuel. The biofuel was derived from oil pressed out of Salicornia plants, which require saltwater to grow.

Gulf News reported that a full 50 percent of the jet fuel needed to take the plane to its destination was biofuel, which is an extraordinarily high ratio of biofuel to jet fuel, if this report is correct. Ars contacted Etihad Airways to confirm this number, and we will update the story when we receive a response.

Previous notable flights using biofuel have included a Qantas flight that used a 10-percent blend of mustard seed oil, a Virgin Atlantic flight that used a 5-percent blend of fuel made from industrial waste gas, an Alaska Airlines flight that used a 20-percent blend of fuel made from waste wood from Pacific Northwest timber harvests, and a series of United Airlines flights that used a 30-percent blend of biofuel from various sources.

GM wants alternative to fuel economy standards from Obama, rollback from Trump

Here's an official Bolt press picture from Chevy.

On Friday, General Motors wrote to the Trump Administration in support of a national zero-emissions vehicle (ZEV) program, which would require seven percent of automakers’ sales to be zero-emissions by 2021. That percentage would increase by two percent per year until reaching 25 percent in 2030.

The proposal came in the form of a comment to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), which has put forth its own set of rules to rollback auto efficiency standards signed into law by the Obama Administration.

GM is a member of the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers, which has been a proponent of Trump’s changes to the fuel efficiency standards designed by Obama’s EPA.

Tonight a Virgin Atlantic 747 will fly on fuel made from industrial waste gas

PNNL

A little after 7pm ET tonight, a Virgin Atlantic 747 will take off from Orlando, Florida, bound for London’s Gatwick airport. This flight will be the first to use a blend of jet fuel and fuel made from industrial waste gas from a steel mill in China. This waste-gas fuel will displace some of the petroleum-based jet fuel that usually fills up a commercial jet’s tanks.

The company that makes the alternative fuel blend, LanzaTech, says third-party estimates show its fuels reduce greenhouse-gas emissions by more than 70 percent compared to burning the same amount of jet fuel.
