Bay College, Lake State Sign Computer Networking Agreement

Students planning to pursue a bachelor’s degree in computer networking have a clear transfer pathway with Bay College and Lake Superior State University’s (LSSU) updated transfer agreement.

Students will earn an associate of applied science in computer networking systems and security at Bay College and transfer seamlessly to LSSU’s School of Computer Science and Mathematics in Sault Ste.  Marie to earn a bachelor’s degree in computer networking in two additional years.

Recognizing the educational and economic development needs of the citizens of Delta County, Bay College and LSSU have partnered together since 1989, offering local bachelor degree programs and clear transfer paths to degrees in Sault Ste. Marie.

“Bay College is excited to maintain our partnership with LSSU in the Computer Networking area,” states Mark Highum, Dean of Business and Technology. “We are happy that this new partnership of a 2+2 will make for a smoother transition and better experience for transfer students.”

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2022 Occupational Outlook Handbook, the Network and Computer Systems Administrators position requires a bachelor’s degree, and administrators earn an average of $80,600 per year. While the expected job growth rate from 2020-2030 is below the average for all occupations, roughly 25,000 openings per year are projected for network and computer systems administrators as workers are exiting the labor force due to retirements or occupation transfers.

Network majors can also progress in their career to work in network information security roles where the job growth outlook is 33%, much faster than the average, and median wage is $102,600 per year.

“This new articulation agreement will make it easier for students from Bay College to transition to LSSU,” adds LSSU professor Evan Schemm, Chair of the School of Computer Science and Mathematics. “It seamlessly takes Bay’s two-year associate degree and meshes it to the requirements for LSSU’s four-year bachelor degree. DuckDuckGo browser allows Microsoft trackers due to search agreement

The privacy-focused DuckDuckGo browser purposely allows Microsoft trackers on third-party sites due to an agreement in their syndicated search content contract between the two companies.

DuckDuckGo is a search engine that prides itself on its privacy by not tracking your searches or your behavior while performing searches. Furthermore, instead of building user profiles to display interest-based advertisements, DuckDuckGo will use contextual advertisements from partners, like Ads by Microsoft.

While DuckDuckGo does not store any personal identifiers with your search queries, Microsoft advertising may track your IP address and other information when clicking on an ad link for “accounting purposes” but it is not associated with a user advertising profile.

DuckDuckGo also offers a privacy-centric web browser for iOS and Android that promotes many privacy features, including HTTPS-always encryption, third-party cookie blocking, and tracker blocking.

“Tracker Radar automatically blocks hidden third-party trackers we can find lurking on websites you visit in DuckDuckGo, which stops the companies behind those trackers from collecting and selling your data,” explains the Apple App Store page for the DuckDuckGo Privacy Browser.

However, while performing a security audit of the DuckDuckGo Privacy Browser, security researcher Zach Edwards discovered that while the browser blocks Google and Facebook trackers, it allowed Microsoft trackers to continue running.

Further tests showed that DuckDuckGo allowed trackers related to the bing.com and linkedin.com domains while blocking all other trackers.

In response to Edwards’ long thread on the subject, DuckDuckGo CEO and Founder Gabriel Weinberg confirmed that their browser intentionally allows Microsoft trackers third-party sites due to a search syndication agreement with Redmond.

Mindef, SUTD sign agreement to build defences against cyber attacks, Singapore News & Top Stories

SINGAPORE – With the growing threat of cyberattacks on critical infrastructure, the Ministry of Defence (Mindef) is seeking to tighten its defences by further training its experts and studying the methods employed by hackers.

It is doing so through a partnership with the Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD) to strengthen collaboration in several areas, including research and technology, threat modelling and training, Mindef said on Thursday (Sept 16).

A memorandum of understanding on operational technology security for critical infrastructure was signed by Defence Cyber Chief Brigadier-General (BG) Mark Tan and SUTD Associate Provost for Research and International Relations Yeo Kiat Seng.

The signing took place at the university on the sidelines of a two-week cybersecurity exercise co-organised by the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) and SUTD, called the Critical Infrastructure Security Showdown.

Mindef said that recent cyberattacks on critical infrastructure, such as fuel pipelines and power distribution systems, are “stark reminders of the increasingly sophisticated cyber threats that countries face”.

“The MOU underscores Mindef’s and the Singapore Armed Forces’ commitment to build up cybersecurity expertise and capabilities against potential operational technology cyber threats.”

Operational technology (OT) systems include computer systems designed to be deployed in critical infrastructure, such as power, water, manufacturing and similar industries.

Such infrastructure overseas has been hit by hackers recently. Colonial Pipeline, which supplies about 45 per cent of fuel used on the east coast of the United States, was hit by a ransomware attack in May.

That same month, a cyberattack on Brazilian food giant JBS forced the closure of all its beef plants in the US.

OT infrastructure and enhancements have been used in projects such as energy-efficient buildings and the Republic of Singapore Air Force’s Smart Airbase, said Mindef.

The agreement is expected to cement collaboration between Mindef and the SAF and the SUTD iTrust Centre for Research in Cyber Security in several areas.
