DVIDS – News – Maryland Air Guard exercise skills to be ready for warfare

The Maryland Air National Guard conducted a readiness exercise involving Airmen in a simulated deployed environment across Martin State Air National Guard Base from March 2-5.

The exercise, designated Operation Lucky Strike 2023, was built to test and demonstrate the 175th Wing’s ability to survive and operate in a near-peer conflict while executing unit-level critical tasks. All training activities were observed and monitored by unit subject matter experts and the inspector general’s office, which provided feedback to leaders and participants.

“Operation Lucky Strike is a full-scale readiness exercise designed to test our Airmen’s ability to ensure mission essential tasks are met in a contested, degraded, operationally limited environment including CBRN, chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear environments,” said Maryland Air National Guard Capt. Sara Nittinger, 175th Wing director of inspections. “Everything is driven by the new Air Force generation concept, AFFORGEN. It is how we prepare our Airmen for deployments, where they have to be able to demonstrate that they can accomplish their core mission essential tasks in a variety of threat levels.”

During the exercise, wing Airmen had to operate during simulated cyberattacks, power outages, hazardous material accidents, force protection events, and severe weather. The exercise also took place at multiple locations, including Aberdeen Proving Ground and Ft. Meade, testing the wing’s ability to demonstrate agile combat employment, known as ACE.

“In the future, we could be operating in a hostile combat environment that is contested or degraded against an adversary that has peer capabilities – in other words, as capable as us and in some cases maybe more capable,” said Maryland Air National Guard Col. Richard Hunt, 175th Wing vice commander. “They are going to threaten us as much as we threaten them. Leonardo Prepares To Test Air Launched Effects On AW159 Wildcat Helicopter

Preliminary trials have already been performed and testing on the AW159 is expected by the end of the year.

Leonardo and Anduril Industries completed in December 2022 a number of live trials with Air Launched Effects (ALE) at Predannack Airfield in Cornwall. The tests involved the use of Crewed-UnCrewed Teaming (CUC-T) control software and the ALTIUS-600 drone (produced by Anduril’s subsidiary Area-I), the latter being flight tested for the first time in the United Kingdom.

Leonardo said this trial built upon the September 2020 demonstration when a semi-autonomous UAV from Callen-Lenz Associates integrated into an AW159 helicopter’s mission system, allowing the crew to control the drone from the cockpit as if it was one of the aircraft’s on-board sensors. During the December 2022 trial, the Leonardo / Anduril Industries team was able to evaluate and gather real-world performance data on a range of hardware and software components critical to future collaborative drone capabilities.

The team developed and practiced the drone to aircraft coordination, flight maneuvers, waypoints, loiter positions and overall Command and Control (C2) necessary for multiple aircraft to function together, autonomously. The exercises have boosted the company’s knowledge in CUC-T and ALE data management, laying the groundwork for future, more complex trials.

Leonardo also said the next step will see trials with more drones flying simultaneously at beyond-line-of-sight ranges. This type of trials is considered essential in developing future ALE capabilities. ALEs are also being heavily tested in the United States as part of the Future Vertical Lift “ecosystem” and, specifically, one of crucial pieces of the manned Future Attack Reconnaissance Aircraft.

According to FlightGlobal, Leonardo is working to deploy the ALTIUS-600 from a Wildcat helicopter by the end of the year. Dr Simon Harwood, director capability, Leonardo UK, is hopeful that flight tests can be performed in 2023; the company is “conducting a lot of pre-work clearance trials” to enable later this year “integration of that capability on to the platform to conduct those air trials”, he says to FlightGlobal.

Robins Air Force Base job fair hiring in computer science

It is hosted by 402nd Software Engineering Group from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday, January 26.

WARNER ROBINS, Ga. — The Robins Air Force Base is looking for full-time employees in engineering and computer science.

The 402nd Software Engineering Group is calling on everyone with a bachelor’s degree in several areas to help them support the base

Sarah Martin says they’re looking for “computer scientists, computer engineers, electrical engineers, and software engineers, so if we’re looking for those qualified individuals,”

Robert Hill is a supervisor with the group and say the jobs are endless.

“We have a wide variety of jobs, a wide variety of projects, anything from ISR ground systems — that’s intelligence surveillance recognizance — to imbedded radar systems. We run the whole gamut,” says Hill

The group is responsible for creating the latest technology to assist America’s war fighters on their missions.

“It’s bigger than ourselves, it’s bigger than just the product we’re making. It’s the security of the nation and what we’re doing overseas that helps the war fighters,” Hill adds.

The work efforts are all about keeping up with the technological advancements from overseas.

“We try to stay ahead of our adversary, and all of our software engineers here, they contribute to that every single day,” he says.

Day-to-day work includes working with programs like Java and Python, and some work with artificial intelligence.

“We’re automating a lot of the stuff that used to be manual, taking a lot of the human error out of it as possible,” adds Hill.

They welcome all with bachelor’s degrees to come out.
